Objectives:
This course will give the student an overall view of the computational modeling process. Numerical models will be carefully considered, and implementations will use MATLAB as well as the Cray and IBM/SP computers at the North Carolina Supercomputing Center. This course will satisfy the university's "writing" requirement. And, when coupled with MA 401, MA 401,2 will satisfy the math department's "year course" requirement, in this case on partial differential equations.
Text Book: Notes from Professor R. White, available from the bookstore.
Grading: Final grade (A+, A, A-, B+, B, B-, C, ... ) will be evaluated according to the following: Homework including a final summary of course materials: 50% Group Project I: 15% Group Project II & Presentation: 25% Computer Labs and class participation: 10% Course Materials: Chapter 1. Time Dependent Matrix Model Chapter 2. HighPerformance Computing (HPC) Chapter 3. Steady State Matrix Models Chapter 4. Poisson Equation Models Chapter 5. Nonlinear and 3D Models Prerequisites: A reasonable background in calculus, linear algebra. Some programming experiences are helpful, but not essential. Should be able to use e-mail, web-browser, and an editor.
