    Objectives:

This course uses Matlab, Matlab's ODE suite to solve initial value problems (IVP) of ordinary differential equations (ODE) and ODE systems.  We will emphasize the applications, numerical algorithms, implementation using Matlab and results analysis.  This course is taught at a level suitable for students who have passed two semesters of calculus.

    Prerequisites:

  • MA241, some differential equation knowledge is helpful, but not essential.
  • Knowledge of NCSU eos/unity environment:  www, mail, a text editor, etc.
  • Some programming experience is helpful.

  • Grading Policy:

    (A, A-, B, B-, C, ...) based on the following:
  • Class participation and attendance (15%).
  • Homework (65%). Homework usually is due before 5:00pm, the Friday of each week!
  • A final project (20%).

  • Computing:

  • Mainly Matlab, Unix  operating system(Math. Computer Lab.) and/or NT window system (HA314).
  • E-mail
  • A text editor, e.g. NEdit, Matlab editor etc.

  • Support:

  • TA and Instructor
  • Most information can be found on the web page:

    Text Book:

  •  Notes from Professor R. White. (Click on the section numbers).  Can be purchased or download from the Internet.
  • J. M. A. Danby: Computer Modeling: From Sports to Spaceflight. Willmann-Bell, Richmond, VA, 1997. Optional. But you may find it useful to choose a problem for your final project! I will put one copy in the main library on reserve.
