Students Seeking Advising

For students seeking advising on courses to take, please see the sample plans of work on the Analog Alliance Web-page. Some of the details are out of date, but it provides a great starting point for our discussion. Once you have an initial plan, please come see me during my office hours for ECE 406 or ECE 546. If the office hours are very busy, please make sure that I know you're waiting, so that I can budget time for you.

I draw my advisees almost exclusively from the courses that I teach, primarily ECE 546 (VLSI Systems Design). If you would like to work on a research project with me, I would encourage you to take that course and speak with me often before and after class about your research interests. It's a great chance for us to get to know each other.

Funding for research assistants comes sporadically and is usually taken within days of coming available. Therefore, it's important that we speak often about your research interests and financial situation, so that I have you in mind when funding opportunities become available. Also, a one-semester independent study research project is a good way for us to build the partnership that would motivate me to find funding for you.

Advice to Students Taking Oral Exams

The format and expectations of the Qualifying Exam, Preliminary Exam, and Thesis and Dissertation Defenses differ from concentration to the next in the ECE Department. Follow the link above for a PDF file that details my expectation for the exam, as well as some advice on how to make the exam go smoothly.
