| Sketch Books |
| You're not really keeping a sketch book for this class, as much
as you are keeping sketch pages that can be put into a book.
Use loose, good quality 8½ x 11 inch paper for your sketch pages.
Regular copy paper is okay, but drawing paper is better. Again, no ring
or 3-hole punch paper. Use something that makes a good, dark, permanent
line for drawing; Prismacolor pencil for example. Use vinyl sleeves
and a small (½ in.) binder to protect your pages.
Use the sketch book as a means of exploring form. Find things in your environment to draw. Objects with basic geometries are good to start with, but find things that challenge your skills. Make studies of the objects. Don't just make a single drawing of an object; make drawings from different points of view, or drawings that show detailed views of the object. Use knowledge gained in class. Draw transparently, use overlap, line weight, shade and shadow, scale change, etc. Practice perspective, composition, and contrast, etc. Practice throwing lines to make the drawing. Be loose' and 'sensitive', but also be visually exhaustive with your sketches. A minimum of two pages per week. One due-date will be around mid-semester, the other will be the last week of class. Be dilligent! Do not wait until the night before they are due to do the sketches. |
