Activities

Following are various professional activities that I have been involved in over the past few years:

Summer 2010

I got selected to be a member of STARS (Students & Technology in Academia, Research and Service) for the coming year, 2010-2011. STARS is a student organization spanning 20 US universities, that provides mentoring and teaching oppotunities for graduate students in the area of computer science. Some projects undertaken by STARS at NC State include mentoring undergraduate students, tutoring selected undergraduate courses and teaching the basics of computer science to middle school students. All of these projects are aimed at broadening participation in computing. I'm excited to be a part of STARS. As an induction program for new STARS members, an annual meet is held each summer. This year the STARS Celebration was at Orlando, FL. Through the course of five days, I was able to meet other members and learn projects undertaken by them, as well as build leadership skills through a series of workshops.

In June 2010, I attended the Trusted Infrastructure Workshop (TIW) at Carnegie Mellon University. The five day long workshop provided an in depth introduction to trustworthy computing and specifically, the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). TPM is an innovative concept of securing any piece of technology, by providing both hardware and software security. The TPM chip has an RSA key burnt onto it which helps strengthen protection, rather than a software only solution. The workshop included several lab sessions, that introduced the various TPM libraries.

Spring 2010

In April 2010, I attended the GENI Engineering Conference (GEC) 7. GENI is a virtual laboratory for exploring future internet designed. It is currently at the prototyping and design stage. Several universities across the US are involved in building the virtual network framework. GEC 7 featured sessions on the four active tracks in GENI: ORCA, PlanetLab, ProtoGENI and WiMAX. I had mostly attended sessions on ORCA, since our university is a part of the ORCA cluster.

Fall 2009

I served as an Officer At-large with the CSC Graduate Student Association (GSA) for the year 2009-2010 and as a representative for the University Graduate Student Association (UGSA) from our department. It was a rewarding experience and I was involved in arranging various publicity events across campus. As part of CSC GSA, we organized monthly socials for the CSC department. We also organized a Welcome Back Bash for new students in Fall 2009. As part of the Publicity committe in UGSA, we edited and released the semesterly UGSA newsletter: The Mignight Oil (TMO). The Fall 2009 issue of TMO can be found here and the Spring 2010 issue can be found here.

Spring 2009

In March 2009, I was accepted to attend the Computing Research Association's Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research's (CRA-W) Grad Cohort for Women Workshop. It was held in San Mateo, CA. The Grad Cohort is a workshop where women graduate students gather for a weekend of networking and mentoring. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop.
