Sílabo del curso

Welcome to Spanish!  This syllabus will help you with everything you need to know coming into class this year.  As a Spanish teacher, I strive to challenge and enrich students in a second language.  My ultimate goals are for my students to be able to communicate effectively, have an expected level of proficiency at the end of each level of Spanish taken, and instill a life-long love for the language and culture.

In order to learn a second language successfully, students must develop proficiency in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, and writing.  With regard to listening and speaking skills, participation is expected every day.  The more that your student hears and speaks Spanish, the easier it is to use the language and proceed to more sophisticated content.  Although the target language will be used the majority of time in class, I will do all that I can to aid student comprehension through the use of visual aides.  Reading and writing skills will be practiced through classroom activities and also reinforced in some homework assignments.

My Expectations of you (Classroom rules)

Be Prepared- Bring your book, your notebook, and a writing tool to class each day.  Organize a 3-ring binder for this class with sections for notes, classwork, homework, and "scrap paper," as we will be doing different types of assignments in addition to notes/activities.

Be Positive- A good attitude can go a long way.  Try to leave “outside issues” at the door and remain positive with other students and me.  A bad attitude will get you nowhere, and can affect the class as a whole.

Be Polite- Have respect for other students during class and clean up after yourself (trash, supplies used, etc.).

Participate!- Learning a foreign language takes RISK.  The more that you participate, the more success you will have, guaranteed.  Try your best at all activities and don’t be afraid to make mistakes!

My recommendations for your success as a student:

Try hard to participate in all activities everyday in class!

Stay organized!

Come see me if you need help outside of class!

Complete all assignments to the best of your ability, and NO cheating/copying other student’s work/use of translators is allowed.

Major Policies to be aware of

Turning in work- The baskets on the bookshelves are the designated areas for this in the room. You basket will be labeled with the class period that you are in.

Trash disposal- Do not leave trash under your desk or around the room.

Hall passes- You will have personal passes for leaving the room. Do NOT ask for a pass to go to the restroom during the first ten or last ten minutes of class, or during instructional time, and ALWAYS ask in Spanish.

Books- Books are to be taken care of; they are school property and to be turned in at the end of the semester.  Fines will be given to those who do not turn in their textbooks ($50), or return books that are unreasonably damaged. We use the Realidades book by Prentice Hall, and students will receive an accompanying workbook that will be kept in the classroom.

Absences & tardies- The policies set forth by FVHS are the same as in this class.

Make-up work/Late policy- You have 2 days to make up classwork/homework from days you are absent.  You are responsible for taking tests and quizzes upon returning to school, due to the pace of the class and my prompt returning of grades.  If you have missed instructional time, you will be responsible for setting up a time with me within 2 days to get instructional assistance prior to taking the test.

Getting extra help- I will be available from 2:30-3:30pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If you want to come for help OR need another day/time, let me know. I am here for you!

Consequences - Should a student (repeatedly) engage in inappropriate behavior or disregard school/classroom rules, the following actions will be taken: verbal warning made by teacher, private conference with student, and then either ISS or notification of parent/referral made to administration.

Grading System

A student’s grade will be calculated as follows for each quarter:

            Tests                            35%

            Quizzes                       20%

            Homework                 15%

            Classwork                   30%

To calculate final grade:  40% first quarter, 40% second quarter, 20% final exam.

As mandated by school policy, the following scale will be used for final grades:

A=93-100   B=85-92   C=77-84   D=70-76   F=<69

I am looking forward to this semester with you!  Sinceramente, Señora Cole
