Lecturas
Trabajos escritos de Español III
Readings from outside the textbook are given in class every week, usually on Wednesdays.  Readings vary from poems and short stories, to newspaper articles and song lyrics. The reading will almost always "tie into" the common theme of the chapter, and will enrich the students culturally as well as stretch their linguistic competency in original text that is not solely "contrived" for classroom use.

Below is a calendar, with dates and descriptions of each lectura given in class.  Students: Make sure that you complete EVERY lectura, even if you are absent from class. These assignments are a part of your classwork grade, which is 25% of your final grade. Copies of all lecturas are in the classroom.


ENERO

1. el 28 de enero (jueves)       Soneto XVI por Pablo Neruda
This is a short poem by one of the most famous Latin American poets of all time. Assignment is due on jueves, el 4 de febrero.
Assignment: Hay 2 preguntas.
1) Traduce (Translate) una parte del soneto y escribe que significa en inglés.
2) ¿Qué significa la línea "amar como un ciego?"

2. el 5 de febrero (viernes)    "Mi familia Norteamericana"
This is a letter written by a student who is studying abroad and writing home to his family about his experiences in a foreign country.
Assignment:  Escribe 1 página completa, con espacios.  

Imagina que eres un/a estudiante de intercambio. Escribe una carta a tu familia sobre un “día típico” en tu país nuevo.

3. el 11 de febrero (jueves)    "Once," por Sandra Cisneros
This is a short excerpt about remembrance of past birthdays.
Assignment: Contesta las preguntas.
    1. ¿Qué es el mejor cumpleaños? ¿Por qué?
    2. ¿Lee la parte que empieza con “Porque el modo como... Estas de acuerdo con esta idea que tiene la autor? ¿Por qué?
     3. En tu vida personal, ¿Cuándo te sientes como si tuvieras 4 años? ¿10? ¿Tu propia edad?



4. el 18 de febrero (jueves)    "Uno no escoge" por Gioconda Belli
This short poem illustrates the message that although a person does not choose when and how they enter or leave our world, they can still make a difference.
Assignment: Contesta las preguntas.
    1.  ¿Cuál es el tema principal del poema?
    2.  ¿Estás de acuerdo con las ideas de la poeta?
    3.  ¿Por qué crees que escribió el poema?

    Ensayo: Escribe un ensayo de una página con las siguientes preguntas.
¿Cuáles son tus metas personales? ¿Tienes muchas responsibilidades? ¿Cuáles son? ¿Crees que lo que haga una persona puede cambiar el mundo? ¿Por qué?

5. el 25 de febrero (jueves)    La Liga Espanola de fútbol

Assignment: Contesta las preguntas.
    1.  ¿Cuántos equipos hay en la liga?
    2.  ¿Cómo puede ascender a la próxima división?
    3.  Compara la liga espanola de fútbol con la liga de fútbol americano en los estados unidos.

6. el 11 de marzo     Carmen Lomas Garza y el Movimiento Chicano
This is an article about Carmen Lomas Garza, one of the artists that we are studying with this chapter, and her relation to the recent Chicano Movement.
Assignment: Contesta las preguntas.  
1.     ¿Qué es una fuente de inspiración para CL Garza?
2.  ¿Qué quiere hacer CL Garza con respecto a su arte?
3. Mira a los cuadros de Garza. ¿Cuáles son unos temas y elementos que usa CL Garza en su arte? ¿Cuál es tu favorito?
4. ¿Quién es una persona chicana?
5. ¿Es insulto ser llamado "Un chicano"?


7. El 18 de marzo    Juanes y "La Historia de Juan"
For this lectura, we analyzed the song "La Historia de Juan" and read a biography of Juanes.
Assignment: Contesta las preguntas.
    1. Porque los LA Times declaró Juanes como uno de las personas mas importantes del mundo?
    2. Describe tres "exitos" que tuvo Juanes.
    3. Qué es el "Parque de las Palomas?"
    4. Porqué es triste la cancion "La Historia de Juan?"
    5. (En inglés) What does line 21 of the song mean to you?

8. El 8 de abril    Odas al tomate y maíz
These are two poems written by Pablo Neruda that are "homages" to a certain everyday object (in this instance, foods). There is no assignment associated; just use the words to help you get to your 50 palabras for the Cuaderno de Investigación.


9. El 15 de abril        Ojalá que llueva café por Juan Luis Guerra
This is a song that brings alot of culture to the table. It shows the importance of coffee as a crop in many Spanish-speaking countries and  introduces many new words.
Assignment:
1. Cualés son 2 deseos que tiene el cantante?
2. Por qué quiere que "llueva café" y no agua?
3. Encuentra una frase que usa el subjuntivo y tradúcela.
(Tus respuestas para #s 1 y 3 necesitan ser diferentes!)


10. el 22 de abril        A Dios le Pido por Juanes
This is another song by our favorite singer Juanes :)  that is a prayer to God about things that he wants to happen. It reinforces the uses of the subjunctive that we have been studying about. We will listen to and analyze the lyrics in class.


el 29 de abril        Soneto por Pablo Neruda
This poem is one of whole and complete love and is written by one of the most famous Latin American poets.
Assignment: 2 preguntas
1) Escoge una parte del poema y tradúcela. Qué significa en inglés?
2) Cuál es tu línea favorito? Por qué?


el 6 de mayo        Una carta a Dios
This is a short story that you will definately read in college if you pursue Spanish. Has a very cute ending!

el 12 de mayo        Para tu Amor
This is another song by Juanes, is he so great! A very sweet and loving song.
