Volcan
(volcano) Mombacho is a nature reserve that really does exists -- and not just
on paper. The park of Volcan Mombacho is able to be guarded and kept up because
unlike Laguna de Apoyo, and other reserves that are protected by the federal
or local governments, it is controlled by an NGO. Local resources were used
by local manpower to create the park and it was aided by private funds, US Peace
Corps, and USAID. It is now totally in the hands of the NGO, COCIBOLCA. Because
of the support that it enjoys it had good planning and therefore has great infrastructure
(nice well kept trails, signs, etc.), and also has a mission of education and
vision. We had the opportunity to visit it one day and hike around for a few
hours. From Mombacho there is a beautiful view of Lake Nicaragua and also of
the town of Granada. |
