Teaching Approach
I am an applied mathematics teacher. This means I teach mathematics that
can be applied to problems in science and engineering, so I am especially
interested in providing a good education to the large numbers of engineering
students on campus. This is reflected in my requests to teach the sections
of calculus and the undergraduate numerical methods courses which contain
primarily students from the science and engineering majors.
There is a close connection between my activities in research, guidance
of graduate students at an individual level, classroom instruction of graduate
courses, and classroom teaching of undergraduate courses. Since I focus
on teaching applied mathematics, performing actual research which applies
the mathematics helps me to understand the way some of the topics I teach
are used. This allows me to draw on a wider variety of applications than
are commonly used in the textbook, and to help maintain student interest
by demonstrating the usefulness of the mathematics they are learning. When
teaching topics that I do not currently apply, the research and interaction
with graduate students still provides me with a healthy approach to the
teaching of the material and generally how to solve problems with mathematics.
