Goals of the Course
The student will continue to learn the basics of the modern approach to ordinary differential equations, including existence and uniqueness theorems, invariant manifolds, and bifurcation theory. The student will also learn to use Phaser, an interactive differential equations simulator.
Prerequisites
Text
Ordinary Differential Equations with Applications by Carmen Chicone, Springer, 1999.
MA 732 will cover selected material in Sections 1.9 - 1.10, Chapter 4, and Chapter 8. If time permits we will also cover selected material in Chapters 5 and 6.
The text has some mistakes. For an errata sheet, click here and look at the bottom of the page. If you find more mistakes in the text, please let me know.
Homework
Homework will be assigned regularly. Some problems will be turned in and graded.
I encourage you to work on homework assignments with one or more of your classmates. However, you must write up your answers yourself.
Grading
- Homework: 1/3
- Two one-hour tests: 1/6 each
- Final: 1/3
