Name of Project

SIP XMPP Gateway

Project Description

The project was intended to bridge the gap between SIP & XMPP two most popular IM & Voice Communication Protocols. I worked on Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP), which is an open, XML-inspired protocol for near-real-time, extensible instant messaging (IM) and presence information (a.k.a. buddy lists). It is the core protocol of the Jabber Instant Messaging and Presence technology. The protocol is built to be extensible and other features such as Voice over IP and file transfer signaling have been added.

  • First part of the project was to develop an IM gateway which included message translation from SIP format to XMPP format packets. I implemented a wrapper function to get required XMPP messages, which would be later constructed into SIP format and vice versa.
  • In second stage the framework implemented was extended to have a support for voice Messages and negotiation. I implemented the RTP bridge for audio connectivity.
  • The third stage was concerned with NAT(Network Address Translation) related issues such as extending STUN(Simple traversal of UDP over NATs) and ICE (Interactive Connectivity Establishment) to SIP facet of gateway
