Ben's Comments on this deck and the SABBAT Sealed Deck format:
"Our local group has played a lot of Jyhad sealed deck for fun, so I
knew a lot about what to expect. With such a limited selection of
cards, you really can't go in hoping for a specific theme.
"That isn't to say that there weren't things I was hoping to get. My
biggest concern was getting a good amount of the smaller vampires. In
sealed Jyhad, the bigger vampires are more of an option because you can
get Blood Doll and Minion Tap. With just Blood Doll available, I didn't
want to risk putting all of my eggs in just a couple of baskets,
especially since aggravated damage was more useful due to the limited
card selection (less of a chance of having damage prevention).
"Speaking of which, I really wanted to get lots of aggravated damage.
:) I've found weapon cards to be very useful in sealed deck, so getting
some of those would have been cool, too. Also on the wish list was
Blood Doll or Tribute to the Master (I got both!), as well as anything
that provided permanent stealth.
"Specific vampires on my wish list were Anton, Beast, Ian Forestal, Jost
Werner, Lambach, Samantha, and Vasantasena. I didn't get any of them,
but I was still very happy with what I got.
"The only disciplines I *didn't use were Celerity and Thaumaturgy. I
didn't have enough presses to make the Thaumaturgy work, nor did I want
to rely on card combos. I only got Flash for Celerity, and I wasn't
going to put in a vampire or a skill card just for that. I did,
however, put in the one vampire with Presence or Dominate, plus skill
cards, because I figured the extra bleed punch was worth it. As for the
rest, I just weeded out what I thought wouldn't be useful and threw
everything else into the deck. (I probably should have left out
Camarilla Vitae Slave and put in Sacrament of Carnage, but oh well.) I
definitely spent more time figuring out what shouldn't have gone into
the deck rather than what should have. At no point in the tournament
did I feel that I couldn't make any use out of what was in my hand, and
there were never more than 2 cards in my hand that I wanted to ditch.
The 7 skill cards probably went a long way towards helping that.
"Since I was given a rather large helping of small vampires (10 of
capacity 4 or less), I decided they should form the core of my crypt. I
left out Jimmy Dunn because I felt his drawback outweighed the
disciplines he offered. After taking a hard look at my disciplines, I
decided that Monique, Stravinsky, and Genevieve were the best choices
for the rest of the crypt.
"What did I end up with? A 'Bruise & Bleed' deck with a lot of pool
gain and a core of small vampires. About a third of the deck consisted
of combat cards.
"It was effective for a number of reasons...It seemed like one of the
strongest combat decks at the tournament, and I think I put at least one
vampire into torpor in every round. The threat of aggravated damage
allowed me to be aggressive and get that extra bleed in when I needed to
(in true 'Bruise & Bleed' fashion). That same threat also kept
opponents at bay, at least until they drew some stealth.
"The bonus bleed cards I put in gave me some critical knock-out punches,
as well as helping to keep up the pressure on some players. Similarly,
the extra manpower my deck had with the core of small vampires provided
extra bleed power, as well as the extra goon to help block when I wanted
to be aggressive. I typically had out 5 or 6 vampires, while most other
people had 4.
The pool gain cards paid huge dividends, especially in the later stages
of the games. I was twice saved by timely Tributes to the Master, and
Blood Doll gave my deck a ton of extra stamina. The extra vampires the
pool gained allowed me were crucial, as well.
"In the final round, I discovered that my deck had another key aspect:
size. At 68 cards, it was one of the largest in the final around. This
became incredibly important when there were only three of us left, as I
knew that while my short-term position wasn't as strong, a longer game
was very much to my advantage. With that in mind, I did what I could to
maintain table balance, making deals when necessary. As the game wore
on, Josh's and Stephen's decks ran out, but I still had a lot of tricks
left in my bag. This allowed me to take a commanding position in the
game, and enabled me to defeat Stephen one-on-one after Josh withdrew.
"This disadvantages to the deck? Intercept and voting. This actually
got me killed in the third round, as I was both unable to intercept an
Anarchist Uprising vote, and unable to prevent it from passing. In all
rounds, I felt nervous without a Sport Bike, and I always welcomed the
occasional intercept card that came my way. In the finals, with Eric as
my predator (the guy who nailed me with Anarchist Uprising in the
previous round), I made sure I held on to an intercept card which was to
be used to stop that vote and nothing else.
My Comments on the Decks and how it all played out:
While Ben focused on Combat, I had the preconceived notion to focus on
"Vote and Bleed", which I was able to pull off (albeit not to the degree
that I would have liked). Pulling off a "Political Stranglehold" (gain
3 pool for each Vampire you control with a cap of 8 or more) with a
Voter Captivation in the Final Round (to gain NINE pool) was the
highlight for me. [Actually, the highlight for me was Josh saying to
me, "You had 3 of them!", upon seeing my 3rd "Night Moves" hit the
table.] J
Although I had a strong voting block at most times (assisted in the
Final Round by a "Demonstration" (cancel the votes of any one vampire)
on the table), I really didn't have many good vote cards (besides the
aforementioned "Political Stranglehold", of which I had 2, though only 1
is permitted to be used per game). This was my biggest problem.
When it was down to Ben, Josh, and myself in the Final Round, I realized
that the only way for me to take 1st place was to take both of them out,
or to take out my prey Ben, and then have the round go to time (since I
was the lowest qualifier, a tie in VPs would not allow me to win). The
beginning of the end was indicated when Josh decided to execute a
"Withdraw", something that I have never seen done successfully in casual
play, much less tournament play. This was a *brilliant* move, since
Josh guaranteed himself 2nd place (with 1 VP) by doing so. I now had to
take out Ben for the win (no more going to time), which was going to be
difficult, since he had pool gain in the form of a Blood Doll, and I
didn't. He was also up 1 minion on me constantly, as I had big guys
out, and he had weenies.
My final death bell was sounded when Ben equipped with the "Femur of
Toomler" (or is it the "Tumor of Femler" :)). He beat my minions into a
cancerous torpor? :)
