I had a friend who registered with a local talent agency during his last year of college, to try and transition into the world of working artists. They said they would send his name and headshot and resume out to casting directors. And indeed, he did end up going on a few movie auditions - although he's mostly a stage actor and did not get any theatre auditions from the agency of note. But his gigs from the agency mostly fell under one category: modeling. Specifically, underwear modeling.

These agencies handle a lot of local modeling. They've got the market cornered, from baby modeling to plus-sized modeling: if you are a local company looking for a model for your ad, television commercial, whatever, these talent agencies will find you your man, or woman. And for some reason, my friend was pegged as an underwear model from the beginning. He's trim, androgynous, Asian - I'll bet they liked the ethnic feel as well as the intangible "prettiness," although why that should be particularly appealing to underwear companies...search me. He just kept getting gig after gig to model underwear. And it's not that he isn't comfortable with his body, but underwear modeling leaves you, well, exposed...a lot...to lots of people.

"I don't understand," he would say to me. "My friend Sally is registered with the same agency, and all she gets are film auditions, film auditions, film auditions. Or the stupid fourteen-year-olds that I always see in the office - don't underwear companies need teenage models? Shouldn't they be having auditions for teens? Why is it always me they want to prance around in their briefs and boxers?"

A year later and these underwear gigs are still where he's making the bulk of his rent money. All I can do in response to his lamentations is shrug, sigh, and smile in what I hope is a somewhat rueful, sympathetic fashion. "Who understands the entertainment industry?" I say to him. "At least you're getting paid for all of the prancing." And it's true - he'd do the same for free if it were a bit role with a local theatre company.

I just got back from a pretty cool conference this last week that I was invited to by the department. For the business department we went on a sponsored trip to a conference on tea. I know that it may not sound like the most intriguing way to spend four days of your life, but if you got credit for doing it, wouldn't you? So basically it was this big gathering of wholesale tea manufacturers that are trying to sell their brands to various small and large stores. We decided that as a group we would say that we were opening a small shop in town here and we would need a large foodservice tea provider. I have never spent more time talking about herbal tea in my life. I mean before this week I didn't even know what oolong tea was and now I swear I am addicted to green tea. We got to try all of the newest tea brands and see all of the cool new packaging. I was really surprised at how big they all said the market actually is, and at how fast they all said it is growing. There must have been a total of about a hundred different foodservice iced tea wholesalers there and each one had a whole different campaign or slogan or angle from which they were selling basically the same thing. Some were extremely high scale teas that we couldn't even talk to beyond the taste test and introductions because they only really sold to high scale restaurants and big specialty stores. It was really fun playing the character game because we even got so far as to say we would contact many of them about a foodservice ice tea sale when we got the business to the final stages of construction. What I have taken out of it is not only a full blown tea addiction, but also another perspective on business that I hadn't really thought of. I think this conference really showed me that there are so many people in this world with a huge range of interests they are willing to pay for and that no market is unworthy of attention until it's been properly researched.

The other day I was walking through the commons area in between classes and I saw a signup for a new student activity. It is for a backgammon tournament that is going on next weekend across campus to raise money for a children's charity. I have always really enjoyed these types of student activities so I naturally put my name down right away. As I was leaving the table though, I realized that I had never actually played a game of backgammon in my entire life. So that night I got on my computer and figured I would play some online backgammon. I have grown up with computers and so I am part of the generation that believes that we can figure out anything on a computer if we just sit and try it once. I was sorely mistaken this time. I was amazed at first to find out that there are more than one kind of backgammon. So I clicked on the first one which is a style called Acey-Duecy. This game, as its description told, came from the original Roman adaptation of the Middle eastern game which had some similarities. The part of the game that I found to be unique from the other versions that I would play, was when I would roll with the two dice, a two and a one. The computer would say that I have the options of making some combination moves with my pieces and I get an extra roll without my opponent getting one. The next version I played was Moultezem which had a bunch of variations from the first game. First of all, the blots in this game can't be hit, and therefore are not taken back to the bar. Also, none of the other checkers can move, until your first piece makes it past the opponent's ace point which makes it a little bit harder for whoever doesn't roll with a higher advantage. I stayed up all night last night trying out a couple of other version called Tric Trac and Plakoto, which of course have their own little quirks as well. Though I am sure the online backgammon version I have found will be used at the tournament, I still have a lot to learn about the game before I hope to ever win against a good opponent.

One of my best college friends graduated last spring and over the summer moved to New York City. She’s doing the writing thing (poetry), and meanwhile, temping. She worked for a literary agent for a while, but he died, so the agency closed, and now she works for one of those fancy accident attorney, I think – as a receptionist.

Funny how these things work. She majored in creative writing in school and now she’s working for a personal injury lawyer in NY. She spent her undergrad career reading Sharon Olds and now she’s sorting letters about injury attorney as a tool to live and be able to do art, I know, but the girl working in the patent office loves her job. It has nothing to do with what she thought she was interested in.

Why is everyone so concerned by not knowing what they want to do with their lives at 20? Even our own friends are doing things drastically different from what they studied just months ago in school.

It does worry me that my friend working for the New York personal injury lawyer spends so much time at her job. She doesn’t have any real interest in what this injury attorney sort through paperwork. Grunt work is one thing if it’s a rung on the ladder, but if you’re not interested in being a New York personal injury attorney. Not that she’ll end up that way, but I’d hate to see her drive get diverted. She writes stunning poetry. One of her poems won second place in a big-deal national contest this month. It’s what she’s meant to be doing. And I hope her full-time temp work doesn’t seriously impede or derail that.

I think the one thing that I’m looking most forward to when I graduate is being able to travel. I’ve been stuck here in Virginia my entire life, with only one trip out of country to Korea when I was in middle school. Other than that, I’ve spent my 22 years in this state, haha. It’s nice, but c’mon. You need to travel and get out there! I’ve been looking at flights to Europe a lot, that’s been my first travel choice for a while. If I can find cheap international flights there and back for this summer, I think I might just make that a reality. Whoooo! Maybe I’ll be able to apply for student flights if I’m fresh out of school. Who knows. All I really know is that I want to be able to travel to Europe for a few weeks (maybe even 2 or 3 months?) to take in their culture and FOOD. Yes, that’s the main reason I’d go, haha. Maybe I’d be able to pick up a few recipes and cooking techniques while I’m there! I guess the cost of staying there would be a little high, but if I can find a few hostels to stay in, I should do all right. The main cost will probably be the flights, to tell you the truth. I guess that’s why it’s so important to find cheap flights ahead of time. Saving a few hundred will always help, no matter the situation, and having a few hundred dollars extra spending money is awesome, haha. I think I’ll have to definitely hit up Italy, Germany, and France. A bit cliché, but when you think about it, Italy and France have their amazing cuisine, and Germany, their beer. I’m pretty sure that those three countries are winners. Though I’d like to visit more than that, I’d have to see, depending on the amount of time I have. Now all I have to do is concentrate on saving up money and setting up an itinerary. We’ll see… maybe I’ll even find a travel buddy and come up with one with him/her.

My partner and I have finally finished paying off her student loans.  She is about four years older than myself and finished her degree a while before we ever met.  Since we got married we have been trying our best to pay off her loans together so that, now, I could go to school.  It was an interesting process because I had no idea what debt consolidation meant and we worked together to get her loans paid off in about five years  Now I have started my degree and she has agreed to help me do the same thing but we hope to be debt free at the absolute minimum before I finish school.  She is now a professor of Political Sciences and she makes enough that we are even thinking about buying a house while I am still in school.  So as you can imagine debt consolidation will be a keyword for life in the next few years.  

At the moment I am at the end of my first semester in international relations which is a branch of political sciences.  I eventually want to work outside of the country for the government or some type of aid organization.  I got in to this major out of interest in social activism and a true belief that we can create a system of government from what we already have, that can uphold the rights and freedoms of every person who stands on American soil.  I know that from my work in various political races and organizations that I have the personality to get things like this to manifest beyond just the ideas and in to the real world.  I was actually torn between political sciences and secondary education.  I wasn't sure until I met my partner if I would have a bigger impact as a teacher or a political scientist.  When I started to talk to her about it  I realized I was asking the wrong question.  It isn't about how much of an impact each profession has, but it is really about what kind of impact you want to have.

I have always been attracted to various exhibitions, no matter which city I lived in. When I was little, there were not so many exhibition Germanycame to my native city, representing the culture and art from a certain time period in Germany – I was too little to remember what time period it was for. Then, a lot of people in the city were talking about attending the exhibition. Also, we had a lot of Germans living in my city because they have been deported there during World War II. Generally, the process of stand construction still looks like a magical process to me, since at one point in time, there is an absolutely perfectly empty space and a couple of hours later, there it is, the exhibition stand, standing proudly and powerfully over our heads. When I was little, I once was even thinking to grow up and become a professional in exhibition design, so much was the process of exhibition stand design attractive to me. Once, I remember a Sunday, when it was really really cold, but my uncle and I still went to this exhibition on the street, which, I guess, according to the exhibition design, should be more called a trade fair, rather than organized exhibition. The theme of it was arts and crafts - whatever people, who made certain articles themselves, could present. I remember the exhibition, and the fair stands, to be really colorful, which, with the contrast to the glowing white snow and sunny frosty weather, created an overall impression of happiness, cheerfulness, and vibe. There was everything – hand-made little and big dolls, bright, colorful hand-made blankets,trade show stands with various artsy and unusual pottery, cookware, plates, cups, and more, and more, and more! It was almost like a fantasy, with all the colors, shapes, forms…

When I first came to the United States of America, I was surprised by how much variety of everything existed here. One of the major surprises that I had was that when I first came to take a walk in a shopping mall, I saw how many stores there were selling all types of greeting cards. There was everything:birthday cards, cards for all the occasions (business Christmas cards ,Thanksgiving cards, etc, etc),business birthday cards, and more, and more, and more. There were cards for every member of the family that one could imagine: mothers, fathers, daughters, sons, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, nephews, nieces, and all the other possible members. There were cards that were funny, serious, inspirational, religious, professional, and others. I was astonished, carried away, excited, and destabilized by the whirlpool of all the cards that were around me. I could not understand the reason for all this abundance at first, but then, much later, when I have lived in this country for some considerable time, I understood that all the occasions are celebrated here. I mean, even if it is something minor, giving a card to someone is very well accepted and welcomed. Like, for example, even if a college class has just finished, and there is a student who was totally inspired and carried away by a certain professor, it is totally normal that this student gives the professor a “thank-you” card, showing his or her respect for and gratitude to the professor. Or, for example, when a person has just had an interview with a job manager and really wants the job, the potential employee might send out a thank-you card to that person to, first of all, thank him or her for the time spent together, and, second, to make sure that the manager remembers the person and singles him or her out when it comes to making a decision regarding whom to hire. After all, people work so hard in this country that I could totally understand why any occasion, no matter how small or big it is, would be celebrated and singled out by

Wow. So it seems like David and Diana are having trouble. It's crazy - they've been together so long that everyone thought that they'd be together forever for sure. Their wedding was amazing - everyone was there and everyone was so happy for them! I know that people have their problems, and that marriage problems are present with every couple, but I guess I somehow never even thought that that could apply to them. Wow. I just hope that they can get through it. It'd be such a pity to see all of their hard work end in a split; they're made for each other, and everyone knows it. I hope that they're getting good advice. I would offer some, but it's not really my place and though I'm close, I don't know if I'm that close. The people around them though, I don't know. They're my friends and all, but none of them have really had relationships that have gone longer than a few months, and none of them have been married so they dont really have the experience to talk from. I guess they have their parents to talk to, but even then... they sort of are biased. Well... yeah, they're definitely going to be biased, haha. I hope that they'll consider getting some marriage counseling at least. I'm pretty sure it'll help, they're certified for a reason. Not only that, they've got the experience and unbiased stance that'll help them deal with their problems. That, and I'm sure they've seen these problems with other couples as well. Sigh. I guess every problem you have seems super unique when it's happening to you, even though it could and probably is happening to other couples. I'm not saying that the problems you have aren't big, but that other people have dealt with them before and so can they. I've seen their relationship grow in the past 5 or 6 years that I've known them, and I know that theirs is legit. There's nothing in the world that could split them apart, and I know that in the end everything will be okay. I guess they just need to take things one step at a time. Maybe I'll call David up and see if he wants to grab a bite to eat. I'm sure he could use a little time out to cool off and maybe I'll bring up the idea of marriage counseling. Let's just hope that they don't think their marriage problems are too much to overcome.

At one point in my life, I realized that I needed a job, really quickly, and really, really I mean, any job. Hopeless, frustrated, and tired, I walked in into a paper/stationary shop, literally saying, I am a student, I am broke, and I will do anything that you will tell me to, as long as you pay me something for it. I guess the owner was rather surprised, but I got the job and the next morning came over the do some mechanical folding and cutting jobs, that, given my education, did not suit me at all, but I was happy. I was happy that I could at least work, get paid, and not worry so much about not having a dime to go get lunch. So, after about two hours, I realized that the paper printing shop also had an invitation shop right next to it, which the wife of the owner managed. When I walked into it, I was taken aback by the beauty of the world in which I suddenly found myself. I totally forgot, which city I was in and almost who I was when I looked at the abundance and brightness of all the ribbons,wedding stationery, sparkling gas paper, transparent and shining special Wedding invitations specifically caught my attention. Since I was ready to get married myself, everything associated with marriage was, obviously, one of my top emotional priorities. Thewedding announcements and elegant wedding invitations almost made me cry, so much I felt for the happy people who were sending them out and the happily surprised people who were receiving them. I could not believe my eyes as much as I could not believe that I had actually a chance to work with all these astonishing materials, immerge myself into the fantastic world of crafts and just relax and be happy.

Last year, I bought a new home down on the beach. It was pretty expensive, but in the long run it is going to be profitable for me. Every year my wife and I take our kids for two weeks to the beach. While we are there my parents come to visit for at least a week. Other family is in and out the door over the two weeks as well. My sister, her husband and their three kids always make it down to the vacation home as well. The kids look forward to playing with each other and going in to the ocean or just staying on the beach and building in the sand. My sister and I really enjoy seeing the kids have so much fun together. We were pretty close to our cousins growing up so I know how important family can be when you are younger. Then every once in a while we have other guests who stop in to see the family and spend some time at the beach with all of us. The bill can get pretty hefty to rent a place to accommodate my family and all of our guests. It is never a problem when people come over to visit. That is why I go on vacation. I look forward to spending time with everyone and not having to go to the office. However, the price of vacation rentals has risen drastically over the past couple of years. That is why I decided to buy a home. It sounds crazy, but we will save almost ten thousand dollars a year on rent costs. Then I am going to turn around and rent the home to out of town tourists during the rest of the vacation months. This will help me to make the payments on the vacation rental property. It is even possible that the renters will pay enough to cover the entire mortgage for the year in only a couple months of rentals. Also, I figure it is a place my family will own for many years. I can see my kids and my grandkids using this as a vacation home. It saves me the hassle for finding a place every year as well. Whenever my family wants to go to the beach, we have a place to stay.

There are two beds in my room. I sleep in one of them and then my yellow lab sleeps in the other. Well, my lab does not sleep in a normal bed. He has a dog bed that sits in the corner of my room near the door. Every night when I go upstairs to sleep, he is right behind me. The two of us have slept in the same room together since I brought him home from my neighbor's house. He was the runt of the litter and my neighbor promised I could have him for free. The two of us were inseparable growing up. If you saw me around the neighborhood or at the swimming pool, he was somewhere nearby never letting me get too far away. Now that I have gotten older and spend more time away from the house, I do not see him as much as I use to when we were both much younger. He still sleeps in the same room, though, and usually wakes me up early in the morning to let me it is time to go for a walk. At this point, I do not even need an alarm clock to get up in the morning. My yellow lab has trained me so well, he only has to set his head on the bed and I know it is time to get up for the day. When I am not in my room, he does not stay up there either. Instead, he makes his way into the kitchen where he sits and watches all the activity in the house. It is the best place to see all of us moving around. In fact, we decided to get him two durable dog beds. There is the one in my room and then my mom got him one for the kitchen. I love the one in my room, it is so easy to clean. It is a professional dog bed, and you just wipe it down, very durable. They are two different colors so we do not get them confused when we go to wash them. We have to wash them one at a time because he does not like it when we take both of them away from him at once. It is pretty funny to see him get upset about his beds, but I know how much he likes them.

I have been having sort of a busy semester so far.  My stress level seems to be going through the roof.  I have been working like forty hours a week on top of the eighteen credits I'm taking in school.  I spend any other moments that I'm not studying trying to review my debt consolidation.  As you can imagine, I don't have much of a social life.  The reason I have been working and going to school so much started three and a half years ago.    When I graduated from high school I decided to take a year off and not go to school right away. I had no idea what I would want to go to school for, so at the time I though it was the bets possible decision.  My parents made it very clear that they didn't approve of my decision and i wasn't surprised; they are both college Professors.  I had decided and gotten a job at a wood shop even before I had finally graduated.  When I came to work it was really fun, at first.  I worked about forty-five hours a week and spent the rest of my time reading and trying to build things after hours.  Right around the six month mark I started to get restless, as I am want to do.  I decided it was time to take this woodworking thing to the next level.  I looked up a program that teaches experienced woodworkers hot to build guitars.  The program started about three weeks after I found it and I jumped right at it.  I quit my job and took out the loan for ten thousand dollars.  That program was supposed to be a year long apprenticeship.  At six months I got restless again and decided I didn't want to do manual labor for my whole life and wanted to go to a liberal arts school.  So I dropped out and they kept my money.  When I got to this school and began to talk about finances it dawned on me how hard this was going to be.  Now, my parents have refused to give any debt help and I spend at least an hour a week doing bill consolidation.  Looking back, I would do it all over again, but I would have made some extra cash at the start.

A mailman has a pretty cool job. I am not talking about the men and women who walk around to deliver mail. That is a challenging job because of weather conditions. I would hate to have to travel by foot in the rain and snow. And, then, you have to take into account that for at least half of the year it is either really, really cold outside or it is unbearably hot. This job would get old very quickly. Instead, I am focusing more on the people who get to drive mail trucks in the United States. To begin with, let me state the obvious. These people have air conditioning and get to drive between houses and mailboxes rather than walk. Clearly, they do not get the same exercise, but they stay dry and comfortable. However, there is something else that makes the driving mailman have a unique job. His or her job presents something distinctive that many people probably overlook and do not even recognize as rare. These people working for the U.S. Postal Service get to steer their mail trucks from the right hand side. Unlike people in some countries overseas who drive on opposite sides of the road than in America, the mailmen here in this country still drive on the correct sides of the street. I would assume it is difficult and strange at first to drive a mail truck all day and then to go home and drive your used left hand drive that is parked outside the front of your house. It would not surprise me that a mailman driving occasionally is not thinking and gets in the wrong side of his or her personal left hand drive car. After a long day, driving a vehicle from the right side, it only seems plausible to get confused once in a while. There probably is training that a mailman has to attend before receiving his or her certification. It makes perfect sense that it would present a set of challenges to continuously interchange between the mail truck and the used lhd at home. It becomes habit to drive a certain way because people become accustomed to what they are exposed to with the greatest frequency.

My little sister is getting her driver's license in Florida. She is going to be on the road with all those little old ladies down there. I am scared and excited for her all at once.  She already got her Florida learners permit. I took her on her 15th birthday for that. I have to say I am a pretty cool big brother. We went down to the DMV while I was there for break, now THAT is a cool brother. Who wants to spend their school time off at the DMV? I can't think of too many more annoying places to be, except perhaps behind those little old ladies driving in Florida. 
So now she is turning 16, and I cannot be there to take her for her test.  I'm sure she doesn't care, I just thought it would be a cool thing to be there for her. I quizzed her over the phone with questions out of the Florida Drivers Handbook, she knows them all.
But can she parallel park? That was the tough one, right? Shoot, I did it for the test, but I still have a hard time, it's not the kind of thing that comes up very often. She is nervous and says she doesn't know if she'll be able to do parallel park or not. She took a course at the Florida Traffic School even, she said she was so embarrassed when she drove past a boy she has a crush on and she is in this dorkmobile with the student driver signs all over it.
I am reassuring her she will pass, everyone passes right? Well apparently, 2 of her friends had to take it twice. So either the test has gotten hard since I took it, or she is hanging around with some real idiots. If you fail it, you can go to Florida online traffic school, do their course, and take a written test online.
I personally think 16 is too young to drive, I think it should be 18. Of course, I did not think this until I picture my sister out there on the road cuttin' off blue-hairs in Florida. But 16 just seems SO YOUNG. If I am only given a short amount of time, like an hour or so, to complete a detailed report on an event or game, mind mapping is perfect for helping me focus on an idea and present that theme throughout the work. Many times I find myself, as a young writer, unable to sort through the continual flow of ideas and notes either in my head or jotted down on the notebook in front of me. However, if I implement this new strategy, I hope to reduce this problem although I know I can never totally eliminate the issue. You are always going to have more ideas and more thoughts than you can possibly put down in an article. Especially in sports journalism because you are limited not only by time but also by the size, or more specifically the word count, of the article you are going to eventually submit to an editor. When watching an event or a game, you constantly are recording everything you see because you never know what you may need and also simply because this method allows you to remember what you witnessed on the sideline or in the press box. In the end, when you sit down to write a story or article, you need a way to focalize the information you wrote down. This needs to be down in a well-organized way to capitalize on what you have in your notes. Too often, journalists write badly because they can not pick and choose properly what information or statistics to present since there is not a designated theme. That's the most important thing. Pick a theme or central idea and stick to it throughout the article.

Over the course of the semester, it is mandatory for all graduating seniors to complete a group project focusing on how to save money for a marketing company. We have to thoroughly research this topic and choose an existing process in circulation. Through our preliminary research, my group decided the best way to save money for a company is to implement a process that specifically focuses on evaluating money flow. It has proven to be quite efficient in producing results. Employees of the company can easily learn about this process and receive certification if they enroll in six sigma online. For our project, we need to produce evidence that this method improves fiscal management and enables the company to achieve growth. Anyway, our presentation is scheduled for next Tuesday and my group is expecting to do very well. We still have to finish some finer details on our report, but it is coming together nicely.

My new job at the bank is so much fun.  It's like a breath of fresh air, to use a cliché, in comparison to my old job as a cook.  No more standing over a hot grill for eight or more hours at a time.  Now I don't come home smelling a steak and burnt french fries.  The most important improvement, my boss is actually a nice human being.  At the last place I worked my boss was a total crazy person.  There wasn't a single employee there that he liked at all and the same goes for the way they felt about him.  It was almost like he made a point of picking on a different person every day until they were ready to quit and then their shift would end.  The only reason we stuck around was because the pay was so good, and most of us didn't have any other experience except restaurant type work.  One day when I got off of work I was looking in to taking a trip to France, which I have always wanted to do.  When I was checking prices I had to keep using my online currency converter to check what the money exchange rates would be for me, since I had been hearing only bad things about the US dollar currency news.  When I was converting the price for a hotel room I got an add that popped up for job openings at a local bank in their foreign exchange department.  I was at a point where I would accept any job as long as it wasn't the one I already had.  So I called that day and set up an interview.  The next week I had an interview with the representative of the bank's foreign exchange department.  The interview went very well and they said they wanted to train me immediately at their branch in New York.  About two weeks later I got on a plane to the city and got trained in what I would be doing which is mainly work with money exchange rates.  It's not what I ever imagine myself doing, but it's still really cool and a much better place to work than the last place I worked.

I am a huge movie buff.  I have always been kind of a movie geek if you will.  There is not a single genre of film I have not found a film from that I didn't like.  Since I saw my first Disney movie at the age of six, I have been completely obsessed with movies of all kinds.  My favorite genre of movies is the type of drama that looks at the way people and the mind function.  Movies that really get you thinking things like, "Am I really crazy?"  I especially like independent films because I have found that more independent films focus on real topics and don't dance around them.  

My favorite place to see a movie is in the theater.  I go to the theater about twenty minutes before the movie starts. I've set up a number of blogs over the past few years; went from knowing nearly nothing about blogging to being the one in the group who always volunteers to set up the blog. I set up a travel blog for our group when we went to Mongolia and I recently set up a blog for purposes of reflection and project tracking for the service learning project I'm doing with a friend, and though the former didn't really get used much, and the latter may only be used by me, I really like doing it. Put a little too much time into it, perhaps.

I find the internet pretty fascinating, maybe that's why I like to do it. Or one reason. I mean, I'm not as into it as some people I know, like computer programmers, or engineers, or gamers, or...lots of other people. But I think it can be incredibly useful. I love when I make new functionality discoveries. Like, labels on Gmail? They're awesome. So much better than folders. Someone's always coming up with a new idea, a better way to do things. Web based project management? Absolutely. What a great way to share what we're doing with our advisor, the community center we're working with, other students who might potentially head up the same program next year if it's successful this year...

Of course, I like it better when things are free. I would rather mess around with a probably less functional, less flexible blog than pay for a domain name, or buy project management software, or get a paid account with some blog site even. You can do a lot for free on the internet and boy, is that sweet. I guess I pay for internet now that I live off campus but it's still really freaking sweet how much I can do.

There are also the perks of being a student. I get lots of stuff for free that way. We can get software through the labs (no fancy web design or image manipulation or project management software, but decent Microsoft Office packs and Mac OS X and Windows XP and all that stuff), and the labs themselves are equipped with things like DreamWeaver and Photoshop. And print quota. I know it all comes out of my activity fee, but it seems free. Money is mostly imaginary.

My best friend from high school moved to California a few years ago. We used to be really close but she's living a life that seems strange and distant to me right now. She hasn't really gone back to school, though she originally meant to. She works at a drugstore, hangs out with her older brother, gets high a lot. Drinks a lot. Has friends who are really unmotivated. She used to be motivated, or seem motivated. Now, when she talks about moving out of her father's house, I just nod my head, say 'Mmm-hmm' over the phone.

'I'm looking at apartments in Sacramento,' she says.

'Mmm-hmm.'

'Downtown Sacramento apartments are pretty good. I have a friend who lives there. He says he knows how I could get a good deal.'

'Mmm-hmm.' But I know in three months' time, when we talk, she'll just have moved down the street to her brother's again, and Sacramento apartments will be a fast-faded dream.

It's not that I judge her for living her life the way she does. The physical distance would already be a factor – but we have this emotional distance between us, too. I mean, maybe I do judge her, a little bit. Or not her but the people she spends her time with. I don't want her to end up like them. Her brother's pushing thirty and still works for an exterminator. He and his girlfriend got married recently because he knocked her up. Once when I visited they showed me how to make a bong out of an apple. Their idea of a good time is getting high and playing Guitar Hero for hours with the baby in the next room.

What do you do when you have a family like that? How do you escape those influences? Plenty of people do it. I haven't had to, and never will, so I can't pretend to know what it's like, and I can't say 'You should this' or 'Why don't you that.' And it's probably selfish of me to let this distance grow between us, but I don't like to talk to her, because all that happens is I get scared, seeing what she's becoming – or inheriting.

I guess I don't really know what it means to get older yet. Days just sort of seem to keep happening. I was upset by turning twenty, but in a general sort of way because of the idea of it. I don't actually feel old (well, of course not, I'm not old, but I don't feel older, either). I see all of these "Prevent aging!" commercials on television and usually laugh. It's the blessing of good, clear skin: you never think about it.

My mom's going through menopause. It doesn't sound like any fun. And for a recovering hippie who never used to even wash her hair more than once every couple of weeks, she's starting to get a little freaked out about how she's looking older. She's been using a device that's something like a Clarisonic and even asked her doctor about Prevage MD. I asked her if she was losing her mind. This is the woman who's worn a t-shirt, jeans, and baseball cap nearly every day of her life, even to work. What does a wrinkle matter? It adds character.

But what must it feel like when you're starting so noticeably to look like a different person? My friends and I, we look very different than we did when we were little, but you don't remember what it was like to look in the mirror as a little kid. When you're fifty, do you remember exactly what it was like to look in the mirror at twenty, unwrinkled, ungray? Do you remember what it was like to get out of bed at twenty-five, fairly easily, no aching joints, good circulation? I know we change little by little every day, but I'd like to think we get an ever-deepening sense of who we are, too. Does it eventually happen that you don't recognize yourself anymore?

Some older folk are really beautiful. My step-grandma is beautiful. She's calm and sure of herself, great to talk to, with a quiet but firm voice that shakes just a little. Her eyes are always wet and that makes them sparkle. My grandma on the other side is also beautiful: strong, opinionated, loud, funny. I'd like to be beautiful like them when I'm old. I'm sure they recognize themselves when they look in the mirror.

The tech theatre students here have started up a chapter of the national tech theatre student organization. They're trying to get together enough money to go to the design expo that the organization holds every year (this summer it's in Houston).

It's hard organizing things like this for the first time trailblazing. I imagine the student leaders of our chapter brainstorming ways to make enough money to go (the Christmas show fundraiser almost did it, but not quite). I imagine them trying to figure out a place to stay when they go to the expo. "There's approximately three hotel rooms left in Houston," one of them said. I imagine them doing internet searches, clicking past pages for Houston realtors and Houston homes for rent, looking for maybe a youth hostel that still has rooms open, rolling their eyes when they stumble across a Houston, Texas real estate website by mistake. (Why do they keep finding Houston real estate while looking for Houston hotels? My imagination isn't really sure. Maybe it's a sign: they ought to look for funding from Houston Heights Real Estate or something.)

It's hard work, setting something up and doing it for the first time and I know from experience. But there's a secret: when you pull it off, there's no thrill better. When they get to the expo this summer, and they will, they'll understand. They'll drive into Houston past signs for Central Houston Real Estate, past cartoonish Houston ten-gallon hats and Houston condos and whatever else one would encounter in Houston. They'll set up their table at the expo, complete with set models, costume renderings, light plots, and plastic banners from their funders exclaiming "Houston Memorial Real Estate is Proud to Support Tech Theatre Students!" or simply stating "Houston Medical Center Real Estate." They'll look around at the other students from across the nation who have their own stations and their own design renderings, students from universities with more prestigious theatre departments, some of them, and I guarantee you, the swelling sense of accomplishment they'll feel will be one of the sweetest they've experienced to date.

I envy them. I've been through it, but watching them do it, I can't help remembering that first thrill. I hope someday I get to experience it again. I think I will. It's my kind of schtick, what I best like to do: start things from scratch.

The most beautiful man I know and possibly the most beautiful person I know is a drag queen.

Sometimes. I mean, he's not a cross-dresser, a trannie. Well, he could be. I guess the definitions aren't too strict. He loves to dress like a woman, and he makes a more gorgeous woman than I ever will. He puts on green or blue eye shadow arching up to his high, high eyebrows, glittery gold eyelash extensions or tinsel-like silver eyelash extensions below that, thick eyeliner to frame it all (his eyes are always the most striking part); he puts tinsel and glitter in his hair, feathers around his neck, a clinging dress on his skeletal form, and frighteningly high heels at the bottom of his unshaven legs. He's the most hideously thin man I've ever seen. It's haunting and beautiful.

He dresses this way for costume parties. But he also busts out the false eyelashes and slinky dresses for drag shows. When he lived in my city, he used to perform at the local gay clubs. Apparently some of the other queens could get kind of catty about him. I mentioned the unshaven legs...it's not really orthodox enough for them. When this man dresses up like a woman, he doesn't really look like a woman. He looks like an ethereal creature, an indefinable thing made of tinsel and eyelash adhesive and plastic, a Christmas tree come to life. And the other boys in drag, who have slathered their shaven chests in eyelash adhesive glue to hold up the sagging tops of their evening gowns, breasts stuffed with socks and toilet paper, bat their lash extensions at him in disdain, tap their long fake red nails impatiently on the bartop, and look away when he sings.

I think they're missing out. I've seen him in drag and it's breathtaking. I've never seen him perform, but I've heard that's breathtaking, too. He once did a number with a friend of his, who defends him against the purists, that involved one of them ripping into the other's stomach and tearing her guts out onstage. They used a plastic shopping bag filled with Chef Boyardee to create the effect. What kind of person thinks of that?

But even when he's not in drag, there's something about him. You see men and women pass him on the street, and every single one does a double take. There's something in him that stirs something in everybody else. That's the core of it.

I thought I might be able to get affordable health insurance through my university,  but it is a good thing I am still covered under my parents' company plan because there is no way any of us would want to pay the premiums on student coverage. It is good that they offer it, but it really is not much of a deal. I have found better plans just by searching for insurance quotes on google. I tried searching for cheap health insurance, but the first site that came up with this phrase it its title wanted me to work too much for the information. I had to fill out way to many questions and after all that they wanted all my information including name address and telephone number before they gave me any clue as to the price range of their cheap health insurance. I cannot afford health insurance so I certainly don't want a bunch of insurance agents calling my cell phone and running up my minutes. Consequently that website got exed out immediately. Never mind! Then I found a blog on the topic that offered up four companies to consider. The one I went to had a decent monthly rate, but the deductible was outrageous. If this is what is considered affordable I hate to see what exorbitant and luxuriously expensive health insurance looks like. It must look hideously unattainable a shining with perks, bells and whistles! Either that or affordable health insurance must be in the eye of the beholder. I doubt any health insurance provider is going to advertise expensive health insurance anyway, so this whole affordable search is probably a little more tricky that typing the word affordable in front of the words health insurance. I light of this, I tried searching for health insurance attached to a number I think is affordable, but unfortunately $25 per month will only get me vision coverage at best. It is so funny how google turned my $25 into $250 per month just to be able to pull something up regarding health insurance. In my opinion there is no such thing as affordable health insurance, but happy hunting anyway.

In a world full of identity theft and the fear of what could happen after, it's nice that there are so many options available to sort of safeguard yourself from becoming a victim. Using things like a gift card prepaid credit cards, and virtual credit cards are all ways to sort of distance your purchases from yourself and keep identity thieves one step behind. When you use a gift card in a store, after spending a set limit, they are basically thrown out and useless. There's usually no information at all on them, making it safe to do so. A prepaid credit card, like a prepaid Visa card is basically the same thing, except that gift cards are usually limited to one store or company, where a prepaid Visa card would be accepted anywhere Visa is taken. A prepaid credit card is basically an anonymous credit card. If you buy a prepaid Visa card, then you're protected from identity theft in the same way that a gift card protect you. There is usually no information on them, and they can't be used to make purchases after you've spent the amount that is put on them. Having an anonymous credit card is very nice. It doesn't link you back to your purchases, which is a great safety feature, but also has the added point in that it keeps your purchases confidential. If you do a lot of online shopping, you can usually use a prepaid Visa card, but if you don't have the time to go out and buy one at a store, it will most likely be much more convenient to buy a virtual credit card. These are great, and work just like prepaid credit cards. The difference is that you just don't have to get out of your chair to get one, and you don't get a physical card. If you're making an online purchase and want that extra protection, you can buy an anonymous credit card in the form of an online virtual credit card to use. When I finish school, I'm planning on taking some time off and traveling. I've always wanted to get out of the area – I've lived here my entire life. I want to get out and try something new, somewhere luxurious and awesome. After some searching online, I've made up my mind. I'm going to Dubai. I know a lot of you haven't been there or really know anything about the place, but that's okay, since I don't either, haha. It's in the United Arab Emirates (the U.A.E.). That was taken in Dubai, lol, on top of the Burj Al Arab hotel, one of many 5 star hotels in Dubai. Man, the Dubai hotels are world-class. They are really great. I've researched a lot about Dubai lately, and the Dubai hotels and Dubai villas are really stupendous – mostly 5 or 4 stars, and built very close to the water, as Dubai is located on the east coast of the Arabian peninsula. The Burj Al Arab, for example, is built on a man-made island! Very cool. I've been looking at lodging options and hotels and villas aren't the only ones available. I've been looking at Dubai apartments and Dubai hotel apartments and can tell you that these are amazing as well. They are more of a self-service type of place to stay, but to a recently graduated college student, that's not too big of a deal, haha. There is lots of information on the internet on Dubai apartments and listings, as well as listings for Dubai villas and hotels, so being able to find prices and reservations shouldn't be too hard. All I have to do is save up a bit of money and find a few people to go with! Ah man, I can't wait. I can already feel the cool tropical breeze on my skin. Seriously, this place is a paradise. With less than 13 cm of rainfall a year, and set in a sub-tropic climate, this place is heaven. I bet the ladies there are amazing, too! Well, I guess the guys will be okay too, but hopefully not too “okay”, since they're my competition, haha.

My friend got into a car accident not long ago. It was his fault, and he felt terrible about it. Nobody was seriously hurt, but the car was totaled, and he was a bit bruised and shaken.

When he broke the news to his dad over the phone, I was in the room. His dad was loud enough that I didn't even have to speculate about what he was saying. We are coming up on the New Year, and that means that it is time for everyone to dust off the New Years resolutions. I say that because I do not know a single person that does not have a resolution that was on their list the previous year. It really makes you wonder: why do people have the same resolution year after year? Well, I can not answer for the majority of resolutions, but I do know about the one main one. The resolution on more lists than any other is losing weight. It has to be the most common resolution.

                Because weight loss is on my resolution list as well, I did some researching to find out a little more about it. The result is that there are many good websites for this. Many are entirely dedicated to weight loss and how to go about doing it properly. From the most basic fundamentals of why people have issues with their weight and then works out how to resolve each of the basic problems.

I had an interesting meeting with my counselor last week. He's my advisor within the Education department and I have been seeing him for the last year or so in the hopes of being confident in narrowing my options of decisions until I finally choose a career. This week I was having some personal conflicts as to whether I want to go in to elementary & secondary education next year. I had already signed up for an online college courses for over the summer which is an overview of secondary educational theory and elementary education principles set as a comparison and contrast of each other. I know that my decision is between secondary & elementary education but the problem is that I don't have any experience working with either age group and I don't want to choose one and find out way too late that I really hate it. I am really passionate about teaching, but I have met plenty of people who have done exactly this and once they have their student bills paid off they all change careers. This may seem like it goes against the idealism of wanting to become a teacher, but the kids know if their teacher is dispassionate and disappointed about where they are. I don;t want to be stuck in the position of some teachers I have actually had before that I just knew every time they walked through the door that they hated teaching our age group. I got this feeling mostly from middle school teachers which I am totally not surprised by. This little bit of memory bias in myself about the teacher I have had makes me feel like teaching high school would be a slightly more satisfying choice, but still I have no professional basis for comparison. Anyway, so the conversation I had with my advisor was basically surrounding all of these scattered bits of knowledge about each one and trying to bring them all together for the help of making a final decision. I do have another semester to decide, but I really want to know as soon as possible so I can focus on my studies and not be so nervous about the future.

TESTING PUTTING A SECOND ARTICLE UNDER SAME CATEGORY.

I am a member of a travel club and have had the good fortune to take many memorable trips at discount rates. The club has enabled my husband and I to travel across the United States, take several cruises to Bermuda, and experience two trips to Europe. We are hoping to have the opportunity to eventually travel to Ireland but that has not yet been offered at a rate we can afford.

To add to the pleasure of these vacations, several of our friends often accompany us. They, too, are members of this club and when special offers come along, we get together to discuss them and decide if this would be a trip we would all enjoy. Sometimes my husband and I do travel alone but, often, we have friends share our adventures.

We have had some great experiences allowing the travel club personnel to plan our vacations for us. They recommend wonderful hotels and obtain discount rates. They advise us as to sightseeing opportunities and even provide coupons, etc. to help with the cost of travel around the cities and entrance into museums, etc.

Of course, the travel group has experienced all of these trips before us and are well aware of what is worthwhile and what is not. They are wonderful at recommending restaurants and rate them so that we will know exactly what to expect. The rating includes approximate costs, quality of food and service, ambience, etc. We know exactly what to expect before we arrive for dinner and have never been disappointed.

There is a new trip coming up this spring and several of our friends are interested in joining us for a trip to Tuscany and Sicily. We are still in the planning stages with the travel club but are considering Tuscany apartments for our visit or Tuscany villas. The villa would allow us to live in luxury as a group as they are available with many bedrooms and private suites. The apartment, however, may better suit our budget.

When we arrive in Sicily we are weighing the same options. Do we want to share Sicily villas or would we prefer to stay in Sicily apartments? We have plans to get together again next week after investigating these choices and voting on where we shall stay. I'm sure we will reach a consensus and be happy with whatever decision the group makes.

This week is the start of my newest student activities committee. I have been in school for almost two full years now and I decided a long time ago that I would try my best to do as many of the activities as possible. This year I have decided to be a part of the students thespians club. It's basically a group of all non-theatre majors who do everything from the acting auditions, to renting the space, and finally to the last curtain close. I have been appointed the director of a play that is totally student written by a couple of girls in the English department. They wrote a screenplay and we are going to adapt it for our setting. I put out an add last week in the student journal, newspaper, and listserv posting dates for theater auditions. I have never been part of a theater production before so I am really excited about the whole thing. I am actually most nervous right now about the auditions because I don't know if I can be cruel if we get a lot of responses and have to reject some people any part in the play at all. I have also never been a part of any acting group so I am really just totally new at all of this. I volunteereed because my friend is quite active in the department and has agreed to help me out along the way. The closest thing I have ever done to acting so far has been my brief stint at modeling. Unfortunately my career ended right as I walked out of the door of my first modeling auditions. I am quite confident though that this experience will be much more satisfying and will go much farther than that. Even if the idea doesn't go as far as I imagine it to, because the screenplay is absolutely brilliant and would also work as a huge budget film, I will be satisfied with my hard work. It can't be nearly as bad as when I tried to take up golfing my first semester. That was a complete disaster. I am not meant to hit anything with a stick with any sort of accuracy.

So, more on the stress portion of consolidated technology systems. I often think about all the cell phones that are coming to market now. Before, my first phone was just a Nokia, a very simple one. Just a certain range of ring tones, some images, a phone book, calculator, alarm clock, and that's it. Now, all the mobile phones have mp3 players in them, fancy internet access programs, etc, etc, etc. I honestly do not like that. To me, I feel that I am actually using a cell phone when it looks and functions like a cell phone only, nothing else. Ok, it might have some advanced graphics and polytone ring tones…that sounds and looks better, I admit, but no fancy gadgets embedded into it. However, when it comes to the pbx phone systems, I actually feel that I like them, as opposed to having a phone and a computer separately. I mean, even if I were to get the softphone, I would still not give up my cell phone, just because I obviously do not want to carry the computer around with me all the time to be able to communicate with someone. But, at home, especially when making long-distance calls, I think that benefits of IP telephony are great! VoIP systems are reliable, secure and easy to use. One of the major benefits of these business telephone systems for me is the highest quality of voice over IP, so that I can actually feel that I am kind of in the same room with the person with whom I am speaking. I have heard that the VoIP security is unsurpassable and a lot of customers have actually switched to Unified communications, one of the IP telephony providers, just because of the supreme quality of calls. So, in my opinion, it definitely depends whether or not someone would want to switch to these business phone systems, or just stay with what he or she already has. I guess that consolidating the landline with the computer is more efficient than consolidating a cell phone with the computer…unless it's already a phone that combines a computer and telephony in it.

With my search for a laptop over, I thought that I was ready to sit back and relax from my internet shopping for a bit. Unfortunately, I then remembered that my girlfriend’s birthday is just next week! My girlfriend has been dying to get a nice pair of boots, so I thought that was where I would start looking. I had heard her mention the name Cole Haan, and I took a look at those and didn’t really like what I saw. I then tried Nine West, and that looked a good deal better.
