February 16-17, 1987 Winter Storm
Summary -
This was an extreme event with a very special and rare sounding from Greensboro.
The February 16-17, 1987 event was a prolonged sleet event that
produced 3 to 5 inches of sleet and a little snow
across the Piedmont of North Carolina with 6 inches of sleet reported at RDU.
Thunder was reported at times. There was a 40 degree warm nose and a 12 degree
cold nose at the surface resulting in a 28 degree difference in a layer just
over 2000 feet thick. A 50 kt southeast jet tranposrted significant moisture up an over
a 30 to 40 kt low level northeasterly flow.
