FLE 400 Homework Recording #2

I. Record the paragraph "What Makes You Thin?" from Well Said, p. 164

What makes you thin? Most people think that dieting is the answer, but researchers say that exercise is the best way to be thin. In one study, thirty-two men who were sedentary were put on an exercise program. They walked, jogged, and ran throughout the one-year program. The first thing the study showed was that the men who had exercised the most lost the most weight. The second thing the study revealed was that the men who lost the most weight ate more too. The researchers theorize that fat people don't really eat a lot. Their problem is that they are inactive.

Listen to the passage you just read and evaluate how well you said the /th/ sounds.

III. /^/: Read the following paragraph about foreign-born residents numbers (from Well Said, p.204). Focus on saying the /^/ sound correctly in the bolded words as well as good thought groups and focus.

In a 1997 study, the Census Bureau reports that nearly one in 10 residents of the United States was foreign born. The number is nearly double the percentage of foreign born in 1970 (4.8%). Much of the foreign-born population (one third of all immigrants) resides in California. New York ranks second and Florida third. The government study also includes where immigrants are from. One of every two foreign-born residents comes from Central and South America and the Caribbean.

Listen to the passage you just read (listen to the second time only) and evaluate how well you said the /^/ sounds.

IV. Practice with /a/ from Well Said, Appendix C.

Testosterone, the hormone responsible for sex drive and aggression, may have some influence on our choice of jobs. According to a study by a Georgia State University psychology professor, people with high levels of testosterone opt for professions in which they face severe competition to succeed. Actors have the most testosterone of all; doctors and trial lawyers rank high too. The lowest levels of testosterone are found among nurses and ministers, who devote themselves to comforting, not competing with, others. Because women have lower levels of testosterone than men in general, the researcher cautions that success is not dependent on hormones. Biology is important, but it is not destiny.

Listen to the passage you just read and evaluate how well you said the /a/ sounds.
