SUM Activities

SUM (Society for Undergraduate Mathematics) is a society for any undergraduate student who is interested in mathematics. We hold regular meetings and we invite speakers from various areas of mathematics to join us. There are no dues, and all meetings are open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Faculty members are welcome as well. For more information contact Dr. Scroggs (scroggs@
math.ncsu.edu).

There were two meetings in the Fall of 1999. On September 17, 1999
Pam Florenzya from Career Planning and Placement Center.spoke about Online resumes. On October 22 Mr. Charles Dunn discussed the courses in Actuarial Math that are being offered to prepare students for Actuarial Exam 1.

The first meeting for Spring 2000 featured private-industry mathematicians. Participants from the North Carolina School of Science and Math, and undergraduate and graduate students from NCSU, Meredith and High Point were invited. Charles Dunn and Howard Cohen described the actuarial science profession. Mr Cohen, of Geico Insurance, encouraged attendees to interview the next day. Mr Dunn contributes to NCSU and is very active in the actuarial science curriculum

All alumni are invited to participate in SUM activities. You (or your company) can be featured at the meeting, or you may simply show up and enjoy the pizza.

Please contact Dr. Scroggs (scroggs@unity.ncsu.edu or 515-7817) for more information.

SUM goes down to GSA
(Faculty aren't even in the game!)

A spectacular display of bowling prowess resulted in a resounding defeat of SUM at the Fall 1999 Math Bowling Challenge, Dec 10, 1999. Brad Weir, who placed second overall in the GSA category, said "yep, I guess we won". Jeff Scroggs, who placed first (and last) in the Faculty category, set the curve with an overall lowest score. Dr. Scroggs punctuated the defeat saying "yep, I guess I lost". Sports commentators attributed the GSA win to the fans. (The GSA was the only team whose fans showed up for the tournament.)
