The Graduate Program
The graduate program continues to thrive. Thirty two new students entered the department during the year 1998-1999 school year.Fourteen people passed the qualifying examination. Further, twelve students received the doctorate and nine earned a master's degree.
The department instituted a new procedure, called the option B, for obtaining a master's degree. In this process a student who passes the qualifying examination can be awarded a master's degree without writing a master's project. The rest of the requirements for a master's degree must be met. This year, 4 option B master's degrees were awarded.
A new qualifying examination was approved. It will be based on the sequence Ma 531-731, on control theory, and the first examination was given in August 1999. Preparations are under way to institute another examination sequence dealing with computer algebra.
Our recruiting weekend was very successful. Some supplementary funds from the CRSC helped with expenses. Thanks are due to the many faculty and graduate students that contributed time and effort to the weekend. Other factors in our successful recruiting have been the continued development of our web site and of our program brochure. It is clear that the site is reaching a large number of students. The web site has been expanded so that it now carries all the information needed by graduate students. Our brochure, now professionally done, has been revised to reflect the change in the University numbering system and the new qualifying examination sequence.
Finally, our graduate students again earned a number of awards. The Winton- Rose Award went to Lea Jenkins and Matt Matthews while the Maltbie Award went to Craig Bauer, Dan Gagliardi and Michael Horton. The excellent work of our TAs was recognized by the Outstanding Teaching Awards won by Craig Bauer, Chris Dometrius, Dan Gagliardi, Michelle Horton, Michael Horton, Leslie Jones and David Morin.
