Instructions

The forms available at the bottom of this page are intended to serve as the Personal Statement portion of the application for admission to the graduate programs in the Department of Psychology. Please proceed as follows:

(1) Select the form(s) appropriate to the specific program(s) within Psychology to which you wish to apply.

(2) Download a copy of the appropriate form to your own computer. Each form is a MS-Word form (.doc).

(3) Complete the information requested and include responses to any open-ended questions. The form should allow you to cut-and-paste from other documents you may have already prepared. You may, of course, save your work and return to it as often as you wish.

(4) When the Personal Statement is ready, be sure to save it. Then use whatever application you wish to convert the completed document to a .pdf format. (For most applicants, your word-processing application will allow you to save your finished work as a .pdf, but you may do the conversion with whatever application can produce the necessary format.)

Note that all relevant information you wish to be reviewed as part of your Statement, should be in that document itself. PLEASE DO NOT SUBMIT OTHER DOCUMENTS OR CVs, nor reference such content in your Personal Statement

There are TWO alternative ways to submit your statement. Method 1 is strongly preferred.

Method 1

Upload the .pdf version of your Personal Statement into the appropriate section of your primary on-line ApplyYourself application. THIS MUST BE DONE BEFORE YOU PAY YOUR FEE AND SUBMIT YOUR APPLICATION. Once an application has been submitted, you can no longer change its content.

Method 2

Send the .pdf version of your Personal Statement, as an email attachment, to the Graduate Programs Assistant, at: psych_studentservices@ncsu.edu Important note: to ensure proper filing, both the subject line of your email and the name of the attached file should read: "Statement PSD LastName FirstName" (w/o quotes or other punctuation); for example, Statement PSD Jones John (PSD is the curriculum code for Lifespan Developmental Psychology.) You should be notified within a week or so that your Statement has been received and can be processed.

5) Please check that -- if you must submit your Statement as an attachment -- the document you send is in the basic .pdf format. The most-typical problem encountered involves Statements that arrive in unusual formats (e.g., conversions to .docx, .rtf, word-perfect, or MS-Works formats).

Note: In addition to uploading your program-specific Statement, you will need to complete the Campus Safety-Related questions in that same section of the on-line application.

Please Note: The DEADLINES for our receipt of application materials, including the Personal Statement, are now as follows:

To be considered for admission in Fall 2011, applications to Lifespan Developmental, I-O, Human Factors & Ergonomics, and Psychology in the Public Interest should be complete by January 5, 2011. This deadline (and NOT the much-later university deadline) is the one used by the Department of Psychology. This deadline is earlier than for previous years.

Note: Applicants to the School Psychology program should have applications and all supporting materials in our hands by December 15, 2010, to be assured of receiving full consideration.

Please do not submit applications before mid-October, 2010.

Main Application Form (for NC State University)

To apply to the university itself, you must complete an application on-line. Requests for financial aid can be made at the same time. NC State does not distribute nor accept hard-copy applications.

On-Line Applications can be accessed by going to http://www.ncsu.edu/grad/future-students/index.php and selecting "Apply" in the left-hand column. This same page will also allow you to obtain/provide some initial information, if you are not yet ready to start a full application. To go directly to the full application: http://www.ncsu.edu/grad/applygrad.htm

If you cannot access the on-line system, contact: The Graduate School, NC State University, Room 240, Research Building III, 1005 Capability Drive (Campus Box 7102), Raleigh, NC 27695 or telephone (919-515-2872).

Personal Statements, by Program:

We appreciate your understanding that, although some of the information requested on the following forms is redundant with items also requested on the main university application, having your basic information available in an easily-accessed format, and closely associated with your goals/experience statements, is very helpful to us in reaching our decisions. We thank you for your help.

If you have any difficulty with our new forms, please contact the Director of Graduate Programs at: psych@ncsu.edu
