SYLLABUS
Instructor:
Time/Place:

Textbook:
- Partial Differential Equations with Fourier Series and Boundary Value Problems, Second Edition,
by N.H. Asmar, Pearson Prentice Hall, 2005, ISBN: 0-13-148096-0
Goals and Objectives:
Topics:
- Fourier Series (Chapter 2)
- PDEs in Rectangular Coordinates (Chapter 3)
- PDEs in Cylindrical and Spherical Coordinates (Chapters 4 & 5)
- Power Series Methods for ODEs (Chapters 4, 5 & Appendix A)

Prerequisites:
- MA 341 (Credit for both MA 401 and MA 501 will not be given)
Grade:
- Homework (20%) + 3 In-Class Tests (45%) + Final Exam (35%)
(Final grades will be assigned using the plus/minus grading system).
Homework:
- Homework will be assigned roughly every 10 days and selected problems will be graded by the instructor.
Tests:
- Three tests will be given during the lecture periods on Friday September 16th, Friday October 14th, and Friday November 18th. Make-up tests will be given only in case of illness (with doctor's note) or family emergencies.
Final Exam:
- Wednesday December 7th, 2011, 1:00-4:00pm, Harrelson 210
Reading:
- Unless stated otherwise in lecture, students are expected to read the sections of the textbook as they are covered in the lectures.
Laptops:
- If you have a laptop computer with you during the lecture period, it must remain closed. Students with a compelling reason for an exception to this rule should contact the instructor.
Evaluations:
- Online class evaluations will be available for students to complete during the last 2 weeks of the semester and will become unavailable before finals begin. This corresponds to the period between 12 pm on November 18th and 8 am on December 8th. Students will receive an email message directing them to a website where they can login using their Unity ID and complete evaluations. All evaluations are confidential; instructors will not know how any one student responded to any question, and students will not know the ratings for any instructors.
Attendance:
- Although attendance will not be taken, regular attendance at lectures is critical for success in this course. The instructor will not use office hour time to re-teach material that is poorly understood due to non-attendance at the lectures. You should also view the NCSU Attendance Regulations.
Disabilities:
- Reasonable accommodations will be made for students with verifiable disabilities. In order to take advantage of available accommodations, students must register with Disability Services for Students at 1900 Student Health Center, Campus Box 7509, 515-7653. For more information on NC State's policy on working with students with disabilities, please see the Academic Accommodations for Students with Disabilities Regulation (REG02.20.1)
