Materials

Browning, Robert M. and Thomas Kerth, eds. German Poetry: A Critical Anthology

Hoffmann, Dieter. Arbeitsbuch Deutschsprachige Lyrik seit 1945.

 

Objectives

Students will study German poetry of different literary epochs from the Baroque to the present. You will get to know some major German poets and different forms of poetry. You will learn how to appreciate poetry, how to better understand and analyze it. By discussing German poetry in German, you will also improve your command of the German language.

 

Requirements

-      2 papers (about 3 pages double-spaced) on selected poems, poets of your choice

-     6 short analyses of poems

-     midterm

-     final.

 

Attendance

Regular attendance is very important .Three absences are allowed during the semester, but each subsequent unexcused absence will result in an automatic reduction of your grade by one percentage point.

 

Grading

2 papers:                      30%

6 written homeworks:    15%

Participation:                 15%

Midterm:                       20%

Final:                             20%
