Urban and Consumer Horticulture; Plant/Environment Interactions, Urban Plant Ecology; Environmental Science

  • Lead the Urban Horticulture program for North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension
    Directed the Urban Horticulture program in one of the largest metropolitan counties in the country for 11 years.
  • Part of the team that created a web-based, distance education course for the ASU Plant Biology course and the accompanying lab for non-majors.
 

Leadership and Team-Building

  • Inherited a program with 60 volunteers and enriched it to over 500 volunteers donating over 38,000 hours of service per year.
    Developed 15-member Volunteer Management Team to direct program.
  • Chaired statewide Extension working team for Master Gardeners and Youth Gardening; teams comprised of Extension Specialist, Agents and Program Coordinators.
 

Oral and Written Communication Skills

  • Created a Toastmasters program for Master Gardeners in Maricopa County.
  • Took biology course in popular writing (delivering science to the non-scientific community).
  • Invited Speaker to National and International Conferences.
  • Written four books, numerous publications, newspaper, magazine and journal articles.
  • Minored in Educational Technology, designed and manage multiple websites.
 

Securing Funding to Support Program Work

  • Secured from city, county, state, federal, and private sources a total of $442,148 in in-kind donations and $957,177 in cash donations for a total of $1,399,325 in support of the Maricopa County Urban Horticulture Program.
  • Established three separate endowments for the Urban Horticulture Program in Maricopa County:  $15,566.86 - Urban Horticulture; $11,381.00 - Master Gardener Scholarship; $11,191.44 Youth Gardening.
 

Training and Instruction

  • Developed initial training program, monthly up-dates, and extensive advanced training and certification program for Master Gardeners.
  • Helped coordinate the bi-annual Master Gardener University.
  • Assisted with development of topics and speakers for in-service training for horticulture professionals in Extension.
  • Taught the lab for Plant Biology for non-majors as teaching assistant at ASU
 

Strategic Planning

  • Certified Group Facilitator with the Technology of Participation:  Focusing Collective Power for Change.
