Evaluating Offers

Questions to Ask Yourself

Communicating with the Employer:
How to ask for more time, etc.

There's nothing quite like...
the first time someone offers you a job.  It's exciting, but can also trigger some anxiety about making the right decision for you.  This is a great time to schedule an appointment with your counselor to talk it out, and evaluate your options. Call 919-515-2396 to schedule an appointment with Leslie.

When you accept an offer for an internship, co-op, or job (whether verbally or in writing) – this is a commitment.  You expect the employer to stop interviewing other students and the employer expects you to stop interviewing with other companies.

It is not okay for you to change your mind because a “better opportunity” has become available.  This is unethical.  You compromise not only your own personal and professional standards but also those of NC State.  Your actions can have far reaching consequences; employers have terminated relationships with universities as a result.

Solutions:

  1. Do not accept a position until you are ready.  If you need more time, let the employer know.  They will make every effort to give you what you need.
  2. Meet with your career counselor in advance to discuss difficult decisions.
  3. Once you accept a position, let other employers (you are considering) know so that they may contact other students.
