"Freedom is what you do with what's been done to you." --Jean-Paul Sartre

Once upon a time, I took a class called Existential Literature. It focused on the works and philosophies of a number of great minds like Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Heidegger and others. And what we delved into was a wondrous perspective of the mind.

The human mind is a vast landscape for mental, emotional, psychological, spiritual and other -al activities. The things that we can dream up, the abstractions that run around our heads are fantastical. In truth, there is no real name for any of these. And that is the true key.

We are an oral culture. Humanity developed a system, words and symbols and languages, in order to better communicate with each other. From the moment we are born into this world, we are shaped by experience and influence. We try to share what we learn and feel through words. And so words can be an art, a deep expression, a yearning for connection. Philosophy does this, and is this: it is a love and pursuit of wisdom by intellectual means.

That is what this website is for. It showcases other great websites, the deep thinkers, their wondrous philosophies, their awesome words and some recommended readings for those of us who feel that exploring the mind is never fruitless.

To set you off, and get you in the mindset of this site, here is a scene from the movie Waking Life. In it, you hear Robert Solomon, a late and great professor of philosophy, discussing Sartre and existentialism. Enjoy!
