SYLLABUS                  MA 121       FALL 2009

MA 121 Elements of Calculus

Instructor: Dr. Thomas Lada

Text: Calculus (9-th Ed.) by Bittinger, M. L.

We will cover the material in the text through Chapter 6. There will be 4 take-home tests (or assignments) which may be found below as pdf files.  As you complete a test, mail it to me at the address below.
In addition, there will be an open notes final exam that you will take on campus (or at another approved testing site).  The exam will be given on December 9 - December 17. You should contact the DE Proctor Center (use the DE website) early in the semester to schedule your exam.

You can access webassign by using the link on the math web page at www.math.ncsu.edu/courses/index.php; there are also several other useful links there.

Grading Policy:  Take Home Tests 65% of grade, Webassign 10%, Final exam 24%

There are no specific due dates for the assignments;  work at your own pace in order to complete the course by December 4.  A suggested schedule is
Assignment 1 after Chapter 1- September 21
Assignment 2 after Chapter 3- October 21
Assignment 3 after Chapter 4- November 6
Assignment 4 after Chapter 6- December 4
Make sure that you complete the indicated chapters before you attempt the assignments.

In order to do well on these tests, you should keep up with the homework assignments that are mentioned in the lectures.   You do not send in these problems.
