MA 131 - Calculus for Life and Management Science A

Text: Goldstein, Lay and Schneider, Calculus and Its Applications, (8th edition) and MA131 Supplement

The course should emphasize ideas and concepts while placing less importance on computations and algebraic manipulations. The text should be followed in this regard. Applications should be emphasized, the most important of these being optimization and growth and decay problems.

1.1 - 1.6 Limits, continuity and derivatives
1.7 - 1.8 Higher derivatives and rates of change
2.1 - 2.7 Curve Sketching and rules of differentiation
3.1 - 3.2 rules of differentiation and Optimization
4.1 - 4.6, 5.1 - 5.2 Exponential and logarithmic functions with applications to population growth, radioactive decay, compound interest and cooling.
6.1 - 6.5 Integration, including Riemann sums, definite and indefinite integral S, the fundamental theorem of calculus and areas.
9.1, 9.3 - 9.6 Integration by substitution, applications of the integral, approximation of interals, improper integrals.
