Honors Requirements - Fall 2009
1. Attend two research seminar and write [type, not hand written] a two page summary double spaced to contain the points listed below. This is open to all students but must be done by all honors students. Final day for accepting the reports will be the last day of class. Two points awarded for each report. The report should address the following questions:
a. Who spoke
b. Where was the person from
c. What was the title of the seminar talk
d. What were the main points of the seminar talk
2. Valid seminar series:
a. Biochemistry seminar - Thursdays @ 4 pm in 128 Polk - biochem.ncsu.edu/seminar.php
b. Protein journal club - Fridays @ 12:15 pm in 128 Polk
c. Genetics seminar - Mondays at 1:30 p.m. in 3503 Gardner Hall http://www.cals.ncsu.edu/genetics/seminar.html
d. Microbiology seminar - Thursdays @ 11:00 am in the Stevens Room [3503 Gardner Hall] www.microbiology.ncsu.edu/news/seminars.html [Double check this as the spring seminar list is not showing.]
e. PB&J - plant biology seminar - Tuesdays @ 4:00 pm - location 101 David Clark Labs http://cals.ncsu.edu/plantbiology/seminar.html
f. Others? - check with the instructor

EE. Malate synthase
FF. NADH-ubiquinone oxidoreductase
GG. Ubiquinol-cytochrome c oxidoreductase
HH. Cytochrome C oxidase
II. ATP synthase
For your enzyme, prepare a written report in electronic form to be shared with the rest of the class containing the following information. You will be called upon during class when we get to your enzyme. [This will happen during the last third of the semester.]
• EC # [enzyme commission number]
• Major commercial source [what organism is it isolated from]
• Molecular weight
• Number of subunits
• Km for substrates
• Original discoverer and discovery date
[One good source of information is the Sigma catalog. Another is Methods in Enzymology. If you find more that one organism for your enzyme, report the information which most closely matches the human enzyme.]
