Advising
Students have access to their Plan of Study through the University Student Information System (SIS) that can be accessed through MyPack Portal. There are tutorials available to guide students through the system. Every semester, students should complete their Plan of Study for the next semester and submit the plan to their adviser. When the plan is accepted, the advising hold will be released and students will be able to register for courses. LTA majors have access to their College of Education gateways through SAGE, which can be accessed in MyPack Portal. It is the students' responsibility to make sure they are up to date on all requirements.
In order to teach Spanish in North Carolina, one must receive a teaching license. The license for Spanish is K-12. The total number of hours required are 124 and include:
- 36 hours of Spanish curriculum
- 28 hours of Professional Education Curriculum
- 25 hours of CHASS requirements
- 12 hours of Free Electives
- 23 hours of University General Education Plan requirements (GEP)

(For students who entered the program PRIOR to Summer 2009, the old degree key is listed here: 16LTA 088 )
What courses should I take?
It is helpful to follow the 8-Semester displays when choosing courses as it already takes into consideration when courses are usually offered, proper sequencing, and pre-reqs needed. This useful tool can be found at: LTA097. In addition, the Degree Audit in MyPack Portal is interactive, which means you can click on a group or category to find a list of acceptable courses. It is important to pay attention to pre-requisites and restrictions as each college has different requirements.
*Beginning with 2013 graduates, the COM course has been replaced by ED 311 and 312 (Assessment Course). Students graduating prior to 2013 are eligible to take the Assessment course in lieu of COM. The pre-requisite for this course is Admission to Candidacy.
I want to study abroad.
Studying abroad is a great way to experience the language and culture outside of the university setting. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures has several study abroad programs for summer or semester study, inluding Peru, Spain, and Mexico. There is a semester abroad program to Spain. The first step is to visit the study abroad website to find a program that interests you and works with your schedule (summer or semester). Then, meet with your adviser to formulate a plan. Make sure you pay attention to application deadlines and plan in advance to ask for recommendations from your instructors. Students can complete up to 6 credit hours of study in the summer, or up to 15 in a semester.
When will I complete my student teaching?
After students complete ECI 205** during their sophmore year, they will be considered "candidates" for admittance to the College of Education portion of the program. During the Spring of Junior year, after successfully completing ECI 205**, EDP 304, ELP 344, and a COM class, students will apply for the Professional Semester. This application process allows students to register for Methods Class and the Student Teaching Practicum. Beginning in Fall 2011, Methods will be taken in the fall (4 credits), along with other senior capstone courses (such as FLS 492, FLS 402, etc). During the fall semester, students will conduct observations in the school where they will be student teaching. Therefore, it is important to leave room in their daily schedules for these observations. The professional semester will be in the spring of the senior year, when candidates complete their Student Teaching practicum (12 credits).
**ECI 205 is now ED 204/ECI 204 combination for 3 credits total
