teaching philosophy

My student-centric teaching philosophy focuses on preparation of students for the realities of the professional, technological, and global worlds they will face. To that end, I see “teaching” as an instructor responsibility to facilitate learning, provide relevant resources and strategies, and empower students to apply what they have learned beyond the classroom. I believe “learning” is best conceived as an active role that requires an investment on the part of the student. The payoff for students is when their command of classroom knowledge and application translates into career success.
Ideally, teaching and learning are oscillating processes in which both instructors and students engage continuously.

goals for student learning (in theory)
My goals for student learning in any course is for the student to have command of the course subject to the extent that they can apply course knowledge to a variety of situations, competently execute classroom skills and strategies, and have a critical understanding of the theory behind those skills and strategies. The ultimate goal is to enable students to understand the theory behind practices to the extent that they can mold these practices to suit a variety of changing professional, technological, and global dynamics.

goals for student learning (in practice)
These goals are put into practice by providing material that is relevant to students, working with students to help them realize a positive return on their investment in education, and balancing a focus of theory and practice to prepare them for a changing world. After providing students with important foundational knowledge of the field, assignments that take students outside of the classroom, opportunities to bring  professionals into the classroom, and the use of course material that keeps pace with a changing information landscape are critical. Keeping pace with change is only possible through a proper management of student, professor, and professional resources.
