LATIN AMERICAN FILM FESTIVAL

The Latin American Film Festival is an annual event held each November. During the Festival one or more films dealing with Latin America is shown each night at a different campus from among the participating schools.  Traditionally the opening film is shown at N.C.State University, followed on subsequent nights by showings at Duke, UNC-Chapel Hill, North Carolina Central, UNC-Greensboro or Guillford College (not necessarily in that order).

Each film presentation is preceded by brief introductory remarks.  Professional film-makers from Latin America often attend the Festival and they may introduce their own works, visit classes, conduct workshops and/or lead discussion sessions.  There is generally some theme for each year's event and many of the movies presented will in some way reflect that theme.  Recent topics have included the Spanish-American War (1998, in recognition of the 100th anniversary of that conflict), films about and by indiginous peoples of the Americas (1997), women film-makers (1996).  The Festival is organized through the Duke-UNC Program in Latin American Studies, under the guidance of Sharon Mujica.  Delegates on the organizing committee from N.C. State University are Larry Campbell (University Student Center), and Kent Lioret and Jordi Marí (Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures).
