The Holland Code
John Holland developed the Holland Code as a way to help people match their personality types to work environments. Students will learn their personal Holland Code by taking the Strong Interest Inventory (SII).
The Holland Code involves six different dimensions, called types:
- Realistic
- Investigative
- Artistic
- Social
- Enterprising
- Conventional
Each person who completes the SII receives a personal report including a specific Holland Code. The Holland Code and the Strong Interest Inventory report do not tell students what to major in. Instead, the codes are based on how closely answers in the SII match answers given by people who are already working in, and are satisfied with, particular careers (USC, The Workbook). Meaning, you have similar interests to the people working in those professions. You should check out those professions to find out if you like what they do, like some of the majors that could let you to that job, etc.
But in starting with the report, we're getting ahead of ourselves. Let's take a look at some career fields and careers based on the different types.
