Old Announcements

• I will be able to repsond to requests to be added to the class roll only after class on Tuesday.
• You can take this course either by coming to class or over the Internet. No distinction is made when you register for the class. If you are registered for another class at the same time, please see Carolyn Gunton in Harrelson Hall Rm 254 [(919)515-2270] and she will register you. There may be a conflict with the final exam, and you will be able to take a make-up final in this MA305 course.

  I will record the audio-track of my lectures (in realaudio format) and scan-in the overhead foils (in jpeg format) that I write during class. I will also post the Maple worksheets of my live Maple class demos (in Maple worksheet and Maple text format). By listening to the audio while looking at the transparencies you may be able to follow the lectures. In the past, some students have taken the entire class this way. Your homeworks can be submitted by email through the Internet. However, you must be physically present during the three examinations.

• You must tell me by the end of today (Thu, Jan 13) if you are willing to pay $10 for the online textbook. If a majority of students wish this, I will ask everybody to pay for the book.

• For persons who are not registered and want to take this course. The class attendance is capped at 105. For every student who drops from the TRACS list, I will admit a randomly selected student who has told me by email that she/he wishes to take this class. The first homework assignment is not due before Jan 22, so you may wish to keep up with class until then.

• TRACS remains open for MA305 (Math Dept Policy), and therefore I have no control who can add the class. If you wish to add this class, please try TRACS.

• I will require the online textbook. Please pay Mary Byrd in Harrelson 355 $10, for which she will give you a receipt. You can also send her a check payable to NCSU and addressed to Dept. Mathematics, Campus Box 8205, Raleigh, NC 27695-8205.
• Audio for lecture 5 will be available by tomorrow. It is not needed for the homework. The exam is moved to Thursday, Feb 17.
• Will Turner's office hours are posted. Please direct all questions regarding the homework to him.
• Due to the snowstorm, the homework will be delayed until next Friday, Feb 4, mid-night (just before Saturday).
• The make-up exam will be given on Friday, Feb 18, in Harrelson 274 at 1:30-3:00 pm.
• Exam is on Thursday, Feb 17, during class. You can bring a 8.5 by 11 sheet of notes. Students who cannot come during this time will be given a make-up on Friday, Feb 18. Time and place to be announced. In this case, please send me and Will email if you have not done so yet. You will then sign a statement that you do not know the contents, so please refrain from talking with others about it.
• The University of St Andrews in Scotland has a website on the history of mathematics which contains biographies of famous mathematicians. The biography of Fibonacci contains the famous rabbit problem discussed in class.
• I have posted the solution to the first exam in Spring 1998.
• Due to the closings during the winter storm, the first mid-term exam is moved to Thursday, Feb 17, during class. If you cannot come, please contact me for alternate arrangements.

• Here are the sorted grades of the first exam. I will return the exam tomorrow during class. Online students can send me email with their address and I will mail the exam to them.
• Because it was never announced in class, late submissions of Homework 2 will be accepted via WolfWare until 11:59 pm on Wednesday, 22 March 2000 for 50% credit.
• Homework 4 is posted; it is due at 11:59 pm on Friday, April 7.
• The makeup exam is scheduled for Friday, Mar 31, at 15h30 in Harrelson Hall 201 (where the regular class meets).
• The second exam is tomorrow, Thursday Mar 30, during class. If you have a conflict you must send me email and I will post the makeup time and place for Fri, Mar 31.
• According to the online Meriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, the word inhomogeneous does in fact exist [Will].
• There seems to be no word inhomogeneous. The word is nonhomogeneous. Interestingly, a German/English online dictionary translates the German inhomogen as inhomogeneous.

• Since I missed office hours due to the promotion meeting today, I will hold extra office hours in HA 150 tomorrow, Fri Apr 28, 15h00-16h00.
