Old Announcements

You can take this course either by coming to class or over the Internet. No distinction is made when you register for the class. If you are registered for another class at the same time, please see Carolyn Gunton in Harrelson Hall Rm 254 [(919)515-2270] and she will register you. There may be a conflict with the final exam, and you will be able to take a make-up final in this MA305 course.
Due to problems with the recorder, there will be no audio-track of my lectures. Therefore, I will not scan in the transparencies that I write during class. However, I will try to follow last year's syllabus, so that if you listen to last year's audio and read last year's transparencies, you may be able to do this year's homeworks and exams. Your homeworks can be submitted by email through the Internet. However, you must be physically present during the three examinations. If the Math Dept obtains a new recorder, I will record the rest of the lectures.

Since the exams are taking place in HA 201, we can only register the capacity of that room, 100 students, in this class. If you are wait-listed, an option is to wait and see if students are dropping the class after the semester starts. Then you get their slots (in which order I don't exactly know).
I will be out-of-town for the rest of the week (Feb 6-Feb 9). My office hours are cancelled.

On homework 1, Lauren used a definition for REF that requires all pivot elements to be equal to 1. If you lost 5 points for that in Problem 3, please send Lauren an email to recover those 5 points.

Exam 2 is on Thursday, March 27, during class. You can bring two 8.5in by 11in sheets of notes (on both sides) and your calculators.

I ran out of time on Thursday before I could show how to use maple to find eigenvalues and eigenvectors. You should look at the maple worksheets on the web under lecture 27 to see how to use maple to solve for eigenvalues and eigenvectors.
