Abstract: Methane and carbon dioxide are the terminal endproducts of waste decomposition in landfills. However, there is considerable debate over the extent to which individual waste components biodegrade both in landfills and under optimal, laboratory conditions. Information on component biodegradability is important as it can be used to estimate (1) the feasibility of gas recovery projects, (2) national methane emission inventories, and (3) the amount of carbon that is sequestered in landfills. The overall objective of this talk is to summarize available data on the decomposition of individual waste components with an emphasis on forest products.
