I collaborated with Mike Scantlebury and the South African Expedition of Global Vision International (GVI) to empower ordinary citizens (as volunteers) to do applicable high quality conservation research that can be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at international conferences. A major part of this research is focused on charismatic African carnivores (Leopard, Lion, Hyena, Wild Dog and Cheetah) roaming the Karongwe Private Game Reserve, situated in South Africa’s savanna biome. Typically two or three observer teams (3-6 volunteers) drive around the reserve during a morning and afternoon shift to collect observational data on radio-collared carnivore individuals, which included the location, body condition and behavior of each animal. The results from this long-term research endeavor will enable us to gain a better understanding into the ecology and conservation of Africa’s carnivores. Current research themes include prey selection, spatial ecology and energetics. This research is ultimately aimed at facilitating informed game management decisions with solid scientific backing. |
