John W. Baugh Jr. is a Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina. He is Group Coordinator for Computer-Aided Engineering, and is a member of the Operations Research Program. He is also an associate member of the Department of Computer Science and the Computational Engineering and Sciences Program.His current research interests include the following: systems engineering and computing applications in civil engineering; development of concurrent and distributed algorithms and systems; formal approaches for reasoning about computer systems; mathematical modeling, optimization, and support for engineering design; and verification of real-time systems.
Recent funding sources for Dr. Baugh's research program include the National Science Foundation, the Federal Transit Administration, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and the North Carolina Supercomputing Center. His teaching activities are also related to computing, and include graduate-level courses in computer-aided engineering and design, and an undergraduate course in engineering systems. He is a member of ASCE, INFORMS, ACM, and IEEE Computer Society, and Past-Chair of ASCE's Emerging Computing Technology Committee.
Dr. Baugh received the B.C.E. degree from Auburn University in 1983, and both the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Civil Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University in 1984 and 1989, respectively. Before pursuing the doctoral degree, Dr. Baugh worked as a Research Engineer in Applied Mechanics and Structures at Battelle's Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
