1) Fiction, Crime and Empire: Clues to Modernity and Postmodernism (University of Illinois Press, 1993). Critical examination of crime fiction in the Anglo-American tradition from Poe to Pynchon, focusing on the way in which crime fiction dramatizes tensions having to do with the experience of empire.

2) Pictures of a Floating World (in circulation). Ms. of poems loosely based upon the American experience of occupation in post-WWII Japan.

3) After Paradise: Essays on the Fate of American Writing (in progress). Fragmentary essays -- reflections upon the aspirations American writing has for itself and for American society in general. Essays on William Bradford, Herman Melville, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and Michael Herr.
