All Pro Offroad Rear 4-link

The rear suspension on 86-95 4runners came stock with a 4link coil spring setup (which is actually a mis-nomer since it has 4 main links plus a panhard rod to control lateral movement, so its really a 5-link). This setup used with upgraded springs and removal of the sway bar allowed a large range of articulation relative to the height of the suspension. My first rear lift was from Downey Offroad Manufacturing and was rated at 3inches of lift over stock (1.5 inch lift springs and a 1.5 inch spacer). My stock springs were so worn out and sagging however that i measured close to 4 inches of lift from the system as seen with 33in tires. The system worked wondefully for a full year of offroading. When i upgraded to a leaf-sprung solid axle front end the rear suspension was no longer tall enough to have the truck sit even. To lift it further i removed the Downey coils and spacers and installed Old Man Emu 860 series 2 inch lift, medium duty lancruiser springs. These springs fit perfectly in the stock spring location and provide 5+ inches of lift over stock for a 4runner. The next problem next was that the suspension was so far in its down travel that the wheel had moved forward in the wheel well due to the eliptical motion the 4link cycles through. To retun the wheels and tires back to near the middle of the wheel well i ordered All Pro Offroad's 1 inch longer upper and lower control arms .

Upper Control Arm Links:
Lifted 4Runners with coil suspension and lots of travel can have problems with the factory upper control arm brackets tearing away from the axle housing. This is the result of the twisting force of the links on the brackets. Stock upper links have some flex in there rubber filled joint but when used with long travel suspensions the link is pushed beyond it's limits, resulting in a twisting force being transmitted to the brackets. Having the brackets tear loose on the trail can be disastrous. To solve this problem we have created new upper links that utilized rod ends. These rod ends have much more flexibility than stock joints and prevent binding. These upper links are made from 1" X .156 wall tubing. High quality, Teflon lined 3/4" rod ends (rated 21,000 lbs) ensure long life. Links are adjustable from stock length through 1" longer than stock, allowing the axle to be moved back slightly.

Lower Control Arm Links:
We have created a totally new lower control arm. We started "Johnny Joints" made by Currie Enterprises. These high quality rebuildable joints are custom made just for this application and provide flexibility and control. These joints are TIG welded to 1.5" X .188 wall DOM seamless tubing. These arms are made 1" longer than stock. This moves the axle back so that in lifted applications the axle is centered in the wheel opening. Lifting the rear suspension without lengthening the control arms causes the axle to move forward. Longer links allow the axle to be put back, restoring the wheelbase.

I havent decided what for sure to do about shocks yet. The Doestch Tech shocks i bought for the 3inch downey system will work for now but will be the limiting factor for down travel. I'm thinking of either getting 15in travel Bilsteins or 15 inch BBCS shocks from PolyPerformance
