Administrative Responsibilities I currently serve as Director of Undergraduate Programs in the Department of Biology. The NCSU Dept of Biology offers Bachelor of Science (BS) degrees in Biological Sciences (with several concentration options) and in Zoology. We have offices and student support services in David Clark Labs and in Bostian Hall. With over 2000 majors, the Dept of Biology is one of the largest undergraduate programs on campus. Our courses, especially our introductory biology courses (BIO181, BIO183, and BIO105), serve an even larger number of NC State undergrads with an interest in the life sciences and related fields. I invite you to visit the Undergraduate home page on the NCSU Biology website to learn more about academics, advising, and research opportunities for undergraduate students interested in our department. The Biology Undergrad Resources page is also a useful (and growing) list of websites and forms of special interest to our undergraduate students.

Research and Teaching Interests, in brief I am a developmental neurobiologist by training. How the nervous system puts itself together during
development and how it repairs itself (or why it fails to do so) after injury, during disease, and during normal aging are issues of great interest
to me. I work to incorporate my research interests in the courses I teach each semester.

Opportunities for Research and Study The Triangle area -- which includes NCSU, Duke University, University of North Carolina, and
Research Triangle Park -- is home to an active neuroscience community. Neuroscientists in the area meet monthly to socialize and to discuss recent
developments in the neurosciences. Students at NCSU also can take courses offered at UNC and Duke. At NCSU, neurobiology is represented by faculty
in several departments as well as in the College of Veterinary Medicine. Also at NCSU, the Keck Center for Behavioral Biology brings together scientists
interested in the biological bases of behavior for monthly meetings, an annual symposium for student research, and an annual professional development
symposium. |
