As you naturally take a "ME" attitude when you create an application letter and resume, it is important to translate that knowledge into a "YOU" approach. Self-awareness is the first step in the process. For this online class, I want you to travel to Indiana and visit Purdue University. Often, when people take a journey, they come back having learned more about themselves. Hopefully, this will hold true for your trip.
Exercise
- Click on Purdue's OWL (Online Writing Lab).
- Scroll down to the Resumes heading and click on Resume Design for some interesting tips on preparing and finalizing your resume.
- Scroll down to the Employment Letters and Documents heading and click on Cover Letters: How to Sell Yourself. This contains more information for preparing your application letter and a sample letter.
Be sure to scan other sections of interest. This site has a lot of useful information.
- Email to me at least one USP (unique selling point) about yourself that you could perhaps use in an application letter. This is something that can help set you apart from other applicants and highlight your skills to show what you can do for a potential employer.
- Optional: For fun, you might take the Humanmetrics test. This is a temperament sorter test based on Carl Jung and Isabel Myers-Briggs typological approach. This test takes less than 5 minutes to complete as you answer 72 questions about yourself, and you will get immediate results. Be sure once you view your results to click on Career Choices that match your personality type.
