Read the job ad and company information for Sun Microsystems. Explore this site, particularly the Corporate Information link.

Assume you are an employee in the Human Resource Department at Sun. Your task is to decide which of these three hypothetical job applicants will be interviewed for the available position. These applicants are all making the claim: "You should interview me for this position." Review and evaluate the content of these résumés on the basis of:

  • what "you" (the company) are looking for in an employee
  • the requirements of "this position"
  • the persuasiveness of the evidence provided by the "me" (the job applicant)

Later you will consider how format contributes to the persuasiveness of a résumé. These three résumés are all in a similar, effective format, so do not take minor formatting differences into account in your decision. Application letters will also be considered separately. For now, make your decision on the basis of the content of the résumés only.

Use the links below to view each of the three résumés, then return to this page to develop your evaluations. If you need to review the STAR criteria, you may use the links on the form. Rank the résumés based on the STAR criteria. For example, beginning with "Sufficient," assign a 1 to the best résumé, a 2 to the second most effective, and a 3 to the least effective. Use the comment section to justify your rankings. Your rankings will be totaled when you submit the form, and the applicant whose résumé has the lowest total would be the person you are recommending should be interviewed.

Your instructor will grade your exercise and tell you how to obtain his/her comments. To provide you with immediate feedback, however, when you "Submit" your evaluation, the next screen will give you the rankings and comments of a professional evaluator. Compare your evaluation to the professional's, then go on to the next section: "Formatting the Content."

CAUTION: You can only submit your results once, so be careful. Use the back button on your Internet program to return to this page after viewing the résumés or the STAR criteria. Otherwise any information you have already entered will be lost.
