Application Letter Exercise |
Review the job ad, company information for Sun Microsystems, and Kelly Jones's résumé. Again, assume you are an employee in the Human Resource Department at Sun. Your task is to decide which of these three letters best matches and elaborates on Kelly Jones's résumé in order to support the claim: "You should interview me for this position." Review and evaluate the content of these letters on the basis of:
All three letters are written in a standard business letter format. Make your decision on the basis of the content of the letters only. Use the links below to view each of the three letters, then return to this page to develop your evaluations. If you need to review the STAR criteria or Tone, you may use the links on the form. Rank the letters based on the STAR criteria, and tone. For example, beginning with "Sufficient," assign a 1 to the best letter, a 2 to the second most effective, and a 3 to the least effective. Use the comment section to justify your rankings. Your rankings will be totaled when you submit the form, and the letter with the lowest total is the one you believe would most effectively persuade an employer to grant an interview to Kelly Jones. Your instructor will grade your exercise and tell you how to obtain his/her comments. To provide you with immediate feedback, however, when you "Submit" your evaluation, the next screen will give you the rankings and comments of a professional evaluator. Compare your evaluation to the professional's. You will then be ready to return to the assignment page and use steps 3-6 to guide you in preparing your own résumé and letter. WARNING: You can only submit your results once, so be careful. Use the back button on your Internet program to return to this page after viewing the letters or the STAR critiria. Otherwise any information you have already entered will be lost. |
