Revision of the K&N Air Filter Cleaning Instructions

Upon looking at the K&N air filter cleaning instructions we found several problems that could result in improper cleaning and possible damage to the air filter. Consequently we decided to revise the cleaning instructions so that the risk of user error is decreased. In revising the K&N instructions we provided the users with a more precise and better organized set of steps for cleaning their Air Filter. The revised instructions will benefit K&N Engineering by reducing the number of customer complaints, improving the overall image of the company, and improving the working life of the filter. Below is a list of the changes we made to the cleaning instructions: - Changed the format - Added list of materials and estimated time - Made warnings stand out Format Changes We changed the format of the instructions to read down the page as opposed to going from left to right. We decided to make three main steps with columns paralleling warnings, instructions, and diagrams. This format allows the user to make a clear distinction between individual steps. The original instructions used a numbering format that was irrelevant to the number of steps involved in cleaning the filter. For instance, the user has a choice to either spray clean or pan clean the filter, however this was shown as two distinctive steps instead of one step with an option. The new instructions clearly show the two types of cleaning as a choice instead of two required steps. Materials and Time We added a list of materials and the total amount of time needed to clean the air filter. The original instructions did not have a list of materials needed or an estimate of the total time required to clean the air filter. Having this information will be beneficial to the users because they will know exactly what they need and how long they can expect to spend cleaning their filter. Warnings To increase the user's awareness we changed the way in which warnings were given. The first modification we made was to change the word "hints" to "warnings." The word "warnings" is a stronger word that is more likely catch the user's attention. The second modification we made was to extract the warnings from the text into a separate column on the left making them first thing the user will read. These warning modifications will reduce the chance of the user damaging their filter, thus increasing the life of the filter and reducing possible complaints. We recommend that K&N Engineering adopt our revised instructions. Our revisions provide the users with a clearer set of instructions where the steps are separated into three major tasks that are sub-divided into warnings, steps, and diagrams. The modifications that we have made will not only benefit the user trying to clean their filter but they will also benefit K&N Engineering by reducing customer dissatisfaction.
