WHAT IS COMPARATIVE NUTRITION AND WHY STUDY THIS NUTRITION SPECIALITY?

The study of how nutrients are digested and metabolized across a wide variety of species including man. An understanding of how nutrients are assimilated by various species allows us to extrapolate our understanding of those animals that have been well studied, to those of which we have a poor understanding of their nutritional needs.

What Will You Learn In This Course?

  1. The structure, function and regulation of the gastrointestinal tract
  2. How nutrients are turned into energy for use by animals and humans
  3. How animals adapt to use energy in different ways in health and disease
  4. The stucture, digestion, absorption of the major energy yielding nutrients in animals and humans
  5. The structure, digestion, absorption, function, deficiency symptoms and toxicity symptoms of vitamins in animals and humans
  6. Clinical examples of the role of all classes of nutrients in malnutrition and other diseased states in animals and humans
