M.A. in Foreign Languages
Concentration in Spanish: Hispanic Linguistics
Students
wishing to follow the M.A. concentration in Hispanic Linguistics take
courses in Sociolinguistics and Applied Linguistics in the Department
of Foreign Languages and Literatures, as well as courses in
Sociolinguistics in the Department of English M.A. program in Sociolinguistics.
Our
graduates have been admitted to top Ph.D. programs around the country, or
have obtained college or secondary teaching positions following
graduation.
Students in Hispanic Linguistics should follow
the course of study outlined below, in consulation with their
program advisor. See the Plan of Study with Concentration. *Part-time students should begin with FLS 502, since this course is a pre-requisite for other graduate linguistics courses.
1st Year
Fall semester (9 hours):
- FL 541 - Critical Approaches to Literary Theory and Culture (required of all students)
- FLS 502 - Introduction to Spanish Linguistics (required of all students)
- FL 507 - College Teaching of Foreign Languages (required of all incoming TAs; recommended for all students)
1st Year
Spring semester (9 hours):
Summer between 1st and 2nd years: Begin research for Culminating M.A. Project (consult Hispanic Linguistics faculty for details)
2nd Year
Fall semester (9 hours):
2nd Year
Spring semester (6-9 hours):
