Upstream Bioprocess Development Specialist with over 12 years of experience in team building and management, academic research, design of pilot plants and process development laboratories (up to 500 liters) including analytical and process equipment identification and operation.

SUMMARY

I graduated as a Biologist at the University of Oviedo, Spain, in 1991. From 1994 to 1999, I worked at the Pilot Plant for Microbial Processes (CONICET-PROIMI) and successfully completed my Ph.D. Thesis in 1997 at the University of Tucumán, Argentina. From 1999 to 2002, I was a researcher in the Institute of Agrochemical and Food Technology (IATA) in Valencia, Spain. There, I assembled the fermentation and process development capabilities of the center, being also responsible for managing the technical operations of the laboratory, including resources and personnel management. I developed processes for pharmaceutical companies and actively promoted IATA´s capabilities to produce custom fermentations for third parties in Europe. From 2002 to 2005, at North Carolina State University, I served as a researcher studying the molecular responses of microorganisms to reactive oxygen species. In 2005, I was appointed by NC State University as a Research Assistant Professor and promoted in 2007 to Assistant Professor to serve in the Department of Microbiology and Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center. Since then, developed bioprocessing related courses and provided the expertise that led to the establishment of the process development BTEC laboratory. Presently, I manage daily operations while actively serving in the Microbiology Department, my primary appointment. My research interests include microbial physiology, process development, and optimization of cell culture methodologies. I have over 15 publications in peer-reviewed journals and books.
