History 590 - December 2001

This paper presents two selections from John D. Jones's "Cape Fear Sketches and Loafer Ramblings," which comprise about one-eighth of the manuscript's contents. Both selections record incidents that occurred during the 1781 occupation of Wilmington, North Carolina, by British forces under Major James H. Craig.

History 590, Documentary Editing, requires students to transcribe and prepare an edited text of a holographic manuscript. This edited text, containing a variety of topographic mark-up devices, is poorly represented by ASCII text. The paper, for that reason, is offered as an Adobe Acrobat PDF document.
