Planning-Teaching-Reflecting Lesson Cycle

Assignment:  Each person will engage in this teaching cycle for a lesson on a concept in either Probability, Statistics, Geometry or Measurement that utilizes some type of learning tool (e.g., graphing calculator, computer, manipulative). As part of this cycle, you will:

A)    identify the concept you will develop in your lesson

B)     write a 2-page hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT) for how you think students should learn this topic. You need references to NCTM PSSM (2000) and at least two other journal article sources such as Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School.

C)    develop a 45-minute lesson plan (Follow structure of plan in Handout 11.1)

D)    teach the lesson to the class and videotape the teaching episode (bring your own VHS tape)

E)     watch the video and analyze your own teaching and students’ learning

F)   write a 1-2 page reflection on your video analysis of the teaching episode

  • Do you provide a clear rationale for why you chose the activities you did and the order in which you plan to present the activities?
  • Do you have a well-developed hypothesis for how you think students will progress through these activities, including possible misconceptions and difficulties, as well as why the progression of tasks might help build students’ conceptual understanding?
  • Must have references to NCTM PSSM (2000) and at least two other journal article sources such as MTMS

3. A Lesson Plan for a 45-minute period

  • Does the plan include all elements from the structure provided in Handout 11.1?
  • Does the plan include sufficient detail about the activities and questions that will be asked during the lesson?
  • Does the plan utilize some type of learning tool? Is it clear how students will use this tool?
  • Is everything mathematically and grammatically correct?
  • Are worksheets or handouts clear and professional in appearance?

  • Are you well-prepared to teach this lesson?
  • Do you ask questions to keep students engaged in the tasks?
  • Do make instructional decisions during the lesson that are based on on-going assessment of students’ learning?

5. 1-2 page reflection discussing pedagogical issues of teaching and learning based on your video analysis of your lesson

  • Do you reflect on both learning issues, as well as teaching issues?
  • Do you connect your reflection back to your HLT? How does the implemented lesson trajectory compare to the hypothetical trajectory you developed?
  • Is your writing clear and grammatically correct?
