MA/CS 580

Numerical Analysis I


Many problems in Engineering and the Sciences involve large systems of equations.

Topics: direct and iterative methods for linear systems, least squares, eigenvalue problems, singular value decomposition, resolution of nonlinear systems.

Books:

  • Lloyd N. Trefethen and David Bau Numerical linear algebra, SIAM, 1997; requested.
  • C.T.Kelley, Iterative Methods for Linear and Nonlinear Equations SIAM, 1995; suggested.

Final grade: determined by 6 or 7 projects during the semester (80%) and a mid-term exam (20%) (date TBA). The students are welcome to work on the projects and submit in group, a group being a set of one, two or three students. The use of TeX is strongly encouraged but not required. Late submissions will be not accepted. The exam is individual and closed book.
