Former Undergraduate Students

Monica Overstreet

(B.S.  Meteorology;  North Carolina State University,  expected May 2008)

Monica hails from outside of Roanoke, Virginia in rural Botetourt County. She was born in the middle of the Flood of '85 in Roanoke caused by remnants of Hurricane Juan. Her family jokes that Monica was destined to be a meteorologist. Her childhood fascination with weather turned into a hobby, a preoccupation, and finally an aspiration.

Monica is currently pursuing a B.S. in Meteorology and a minor in Environmental Science. She is a NC Space Grant Undergraduate Research Scholar and is currently studying techniques to better predict Clear Air Turbulence for aviation using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) Model, under the direction of Dr. Lackmann.

Outside academia, Monica enjoys spending time with family and friends, hiking in the mountains, waterskiing at Smith Mountain Lake, music, and snow days.

Barrett Smith

(B.S.  Meteorology;  North Carolina State University,  expected May 2005)

Barrett was born and raised in Asheboro, NC. As a child he spent countless hours studying maps and watching weather reports. He became truly fascinated with the weather while cleaning up in the aftermath of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Since then, he has gained great interest in tropical weather. In high school, Barrett played football, basketball, and ran track. He was also Beta Club President.
Barrett is currently working towards his B.S. in Meteorology, with a minor concentration Spanish. He spent the summer of 2003 working at the Fox 8 studios in High Point, NC working as an intern in the weather center. During the academic year, Barrett volunteers for WKNC radio and is an active member in the American Meteorological Society, Student and Central Chapters. He will be Vice-President of the student chapter during 2004-2005.
Currently, Barrett is working under the supervision of Dr. Lackmann on keeping the lab webpage up-to-date.

Kyle Pressel

(B.S.  Meteorology; B.S. Applied Mathematics;  North Carolina State University,  expected May 2006)

Kyle grew up in Richmond, Virginia, where he graduated from Mills E. Godwin High School in 2002. Upon graduation, Kyle attended the University of Oklahoma for one semester before transferring to NC State. Kyle is currently involved in a research project investigating how convective parameterization schemes influence the distribution of diabatic heating in a numerically simulated squall line, and how through the generation of non-conservative potential vorticity, larger scale dynamics of the system are influenced by the heating distributions. Aside from his current project, Kyle is also interested in solution methods to partial differential equations, model grid structures and interactions, and conservation properties.
Kyle is currently secretary of the NCSU Student Chapter of the American Meteorological Society and is also on the National Board of Outreach and Pre-college Education for the AMS. He was also recently named a Department of Homeland Security Scholar.
Outside of academics, Kyle enjoys whitewater kayaking, fishing, and reading.
