Process Modeling and Technology Assessment

Process simulators, such as ASPEN (Advanced System for Process Engineering), have been developed to facilitate technology assessment activities. Such simulators are useful for the assessment of advanced power generation and air pollution control technologies. I have used ASPEN, for example, to evaluate advanced coal-based power generation systems, including a variety of Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) systems and the Externally-Fired Combined Cycle (EFCC).

In addition to process simulation, which addresses the development of mass and energy balances for all major components of a process technology, it is also important to consider the limitations of the data that are available to support an assessment. Therefore, I have employed a quantitative approach to characterizing uncertainty in the performance, emissions, and cost of process technologies. Furthermore, as part of collaborative research with Carnegie Mellon, I have also employed mathematical programming optimization techniques in conjunction with probabilistic simulation methods to optimize advanced process technologies under uncertainty.
